CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Thunderbird men's golf team posted two top 10 finishes at the Jackrabbit Invitational with Leo Torres finishing tenth in the player rankings, and SUU earning a tenth place team finish. Torres shot two-over-par 216 over the two day tournament with a two under par Saturday.
Torres shot three over on Round 1 of the competition, before dropping two strokes for Round 2 to set up his big Saturday performance. The freshman from Las Vegas jumped three spots in the rankings to take sole possession of tenth place with a two-under-par 72 day.
Joining Torres in the top 25 was teammate Tyler Jones who shot par in round 1 and 3 to secure 24th place with an eight-over-par score over the weekend. Jones recorded six birdies and an eagle after shooting par 17 times.
At just two strokes behind Jones, Rashon Williams earned 36th place with a 10-over-par tournament.
Seth Winterton and Atthasit (Anfield) Srichun finished with a single shot separating the Thunderbirds. Winterton shot 18-over-par with Srichun shooting 19-over-par, respectively. Competing as an individual, Winterton finished round1 in second place overall with a four-under-par Friday.
Ryker Smith shot 23-over-par over the weekend to round out SUU's golfers.
As a team, SUU finished in tenth place with an 899 score, just one stroke behind ninth place South Dakota. Texas State won the overall team competition with a four-under-par team performance. Three players tied for the overall player championship with South Dakota State's Ty Kretz, Northern Iowa's Griffin Parker, and Eastern Kentucky's Willis Gaer all shooting four-under-par 216.
The Thunderbirds' next competition will come at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Arizona on April 4 and 5.
