SUU Softball Heads Back to St. George Seeking Third Straight Victory

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah University Softball team will return to St. George tomorrow to face Dixie State for the second time in six days. The game was originally scheduled for March 2, 2022 but was postponed to March 16, with first pitch set for 5 PM MT.

The Thunderbirds are coming off of two straight victories to close out the Dixie State tournament this past weekend. SUU reeled off wins in their final two games of the tournament over Big Ten opponent Wisconsin and The University of Maine. The T-Birds will pursue a third consecutive victory over a strong Dixie State team who beat them last Thursday in a close contest.

Southern Utah

  • Southern Utah opened up tournament play at the Dixie State tournament this past Thursday against the Trailblazers, falling 3-1 to the host school.

  • After a tremendous tournament in which Makall Whetten reached base 12 times in 17 trips to the plate, collecting seven hits and being hit by five pitches, she now leads the team in batting average (.286), OBP (.464), and slugging percentage (.405). Her OBP of .464 is good for third best in the Big Sky.

  • The freshmen infield tandem of Sophia Masut and Jayne Sepulveda rank second and third on the team in batting average at .231 and .230, respectively.

  • SUU has stolen eight bases on just nine attempts this season.

  • Makall Whetten (1st), Reilly Williams (T-9th), and Makenna Calderon (T-9th) all rank in the top ten for the Big Sky in most times HBP this season.

  • Riley Shue hit the first home run of her collegiate career against Wisconsin, a three-run bomb that proved to be the game winner.

  • SUU has averaged a combined seven hits per game over their past five contests.

Dixie State

  • Dixie State enters Wednesday's contest with a record of 8-14.

  • The Trailblazers fell to Wisconsin in their most recent contest by a final score of 12-7.

  • Lauren Almedia leads Dixie State in batting average (.379), OBP (.486), and RBI (16). 

  • Shea Clements is batting .361 this season for the Trailblazers, while leading the team in slugging percentage (.597) and collecting five home runs. 

  • Kate Dolinski and Attlyn Johnston have been the go-to pitchers for Dixie State this season, combining to pitch 78.1 innings while allowing 48 earned runs.

The Thunderbirds have just three games remaining until they start Big Sky play, with their first home series of the season against Northern Colorado on March 25. Southern Utah hopes to extend their current winning streak and pick up a big victory over in-state foe and future WAC opponent, Dixie State, tomorrow evening.
