CEDAR CITY, Utah – Southern Utah University golfer Chanikan (Pluem) Yongyuan has set the record for most career Big Sky Conference Women's Golfer of the Week awards by earning the league's weekly award for the 12th time, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Youngyuan officially overtakes previous record-holder A Ram Choi of Portland State, who had won the award 11 times.
"We are really proud of Pluem in winning her sixth individual title and breaking this conference record," said SUU head golf coach Richard Church. "We are very excited to see what the future holds both here at Southern Utah University, and in Pluem's future golfing career."
The new record comes by way of Yongyuan winning her sixth-career individual tournament when she claimed victory at the Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational. After opening the tournament with a 79 in round one, Yongyuan came storming back with rounds of 68 and 70 on days two and three to win the individual championship.
The Thailand native sat in fifth place after 36 holes of play but clinched the win by shooting five birdies and hitting par 10 times through the final 18. Overall, Yongyuan finished the tournament one over par with a score of 217.
Yongyuan and the Thunderbirds will be back in action on Saturday, March 19, when they travel to compete in the Red Rocks Invitational hosted by Northern Arizona.
