Southern Utah Softball Prepares for Doubleheader at BYU Ahead of First Big Sky Series

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah University Softball team will head to Provo this weekend to play their final two games prior to opening Big Sky play at home with a three-game series against Northern Colorado next weekend.

Preview

Southern Utah 

  • The Thunderbirds are coming off of a tough 10-1 road loss to Dixie State.

  • Reilly Williams hit her second home run of the season in the game against Dixie State, adding to her team-leading 6 RBI this season.

  • Makall Whetten continues to lead SUU in a multitude of categories, including OBP (.448), slugging percentage (.386), times HBP (7), and doubles (5).

  • Payton Goodrich made her first appearance of the season on the mound for the T-Birds against Dixie State. Goodrich was expected to be a huge contributor in Southern Utah's rotation, but she was out of action due to injuries prior to Wednesday's contest.

  • Riley Shue is batting .286 this season with 5 RBI, one triple, and one home run. 

  • Gianna Carosone, Sophia Masut, and Makall Whetten have stolen two bases apiece this season on two attempts.

  • Jayne Sepulveda's 41 assists in the field ranks fifth overall in the Big Sky Conference.

BYU

  • The Cougars enter Saturday's double-header sitting at 17-6 overall this season, with marquee wins over California, Stanford, and San Diego State.

  • BYU has won their past three contests, beating opponents Idaho State, Maine, and Ball State.

  • Violet Zavodnik leads the Cougars in batting average (.420), slugging percentage (.768), and has hit a team-leading 9 doubles this year.

  • Macy Simmons leads BYU with 6 home runs and 22 RBI this season.

  • The Cougars have three pitchers who have thrown more than 5 innings this season. Chloe Temples leads the team in ERA at 2.08 while striking out 49 batters over 40.1 innings pitched. Autumn Moffat-Korth has a record of 7-4, compiling a 2.31 ERA over 66.2 innings pitched in 15 appearances this season.

The Thunderbirds have one last opportunity to pick up some wins in preparation for their opening series in conference play next weekend. Southern Utah will host Northern Colorado at Kathryn Berg Field on March 25 & 26 in their first conference series of the season.
