PALM DESERT, Calif. – Southern Utah University men's golfer Tyler Jones led the way as the Thunderbirds' top finisher at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate Friday afternoon.
Jones carded a four-over-par 220 to earn a top-50 finish in 41st place. The junior's best round of the tournament came Thursday when he recorded a 72. Jones followed up that round with a 73 on the final day of competition.
As a team, Southern Utah ended up in 20th overall on a 49-over-par 913. The Thunderbirds finished the final day of play strong by shooting a 300 for their best round of the tournament.
Rashon Williams finished second in the lineup for Southern Utah and 89th overall. His best round of the day came Friday on a 74, which contributed to his overall score of 13-over-par 229. Leo Torres finished four strokes behind with a 17-over-par 233 which placed him in a tie for 103rd.
Charlotte took home the win in the team competition on a 25-under-par 839. Nevada also finished under par to take second, and host school Wyoming rounded out the top three. Charlotte's Ben Woodruff secured the individual championship after finishing the tournament 10 under par on a score of 206.
Jaxon Long and Seth Winterton completed SUU's lineup within one stroke of each other with scores of 237 and 238. Jaden Milne competed as an individual and shot a 37-over-par 253.
Southern Utah is back in action next week when it travels to Boulder City, Nevada for the Jackrabbit Invitational hosted by South Dakota State. Tournament play will run Friday and Saturday with live scoring available on GolfStat.com.
