Preview

The Thunderbirds are coming off of a hard-fought 1-1 draw against ACU in extreme heat conditions Friday night. Whitney Wangsgard found the back of the net in the 23rd minute off of a rebound on a shot from Adelayo Oguntade, and goalkeeper Megan Short had a season-high eight saves, as SUU managed to come away with the tie to remain unbeaten in WAC play.

Southern Utah will face another difficult match against a strong Tarleton team who has amassed an overall record of 4-2-3, including a conference mark of 0-0-2. The Texans have earned draws against ACU and Utah Tech in their two conference matches thus far.

Tarleton has had a variety of contributions offensively this season, with three separate players scoring at least three goals and five players who have scored at least two goals. Freshman forward Mila Bettinelli has led the way for the Texans, scoring three goals and recording one assist for a team-high seven points.

Freshman goalkeeper Mikayla Kendall has anchored the net for the Texans this season, starting all nine contests for Tarleton, and recording 18 total saves while allowing nine goals. Kendall has totaled four shutouts in nine starts.

The Thunderbirds will look to extend their unbeaten streak to start conference play and remain atop of the WAC standings. If they are able to accomplish that feat, they will become the first team in program history to be unbeaten through their first four conference matches.

Redshirt-Freshman forward Whitney Wangsgard recorded her fourth goal of the season Friday against ACU, placing her in a tie for second on the team this year, as she will look to continue her phenomenal play on Sunday.

The Thunderbirds will need to press their attack early, and control the tempo of the game in what will likely be another battle in intense heat conditions.

Notable Stats:

  • Southern Utah has outscored their opponents 27-5 this season.

  • Megan Short has compiled a phenomenal save percentage of .894.

  • The Thunderbirds remain in a tie for first place in the conference standings following their draw against ACU.

  • After scoring a goal on Friday, Whitney Wangsgard is tied for first on the team in points this season (12).

  • If Southern Utah earns a win or draw on Sunday, they will become the first team in SUU soccer history to be unbeaten through their first four conference matches.
