Soccer Set To Face Seattle U In First Round Of Conference Tournament

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The Southern Utah University Women's Soccer team will head to Cal Baptist University, the host site of the 2023 WAC Women's Soccer Tournament, where they will play Seattle U on Sunday, October 29 at 8 p.m. MT. The game will be live-streamed on ESPN+.

The two teams are quite familiar with each other seeing as how they faced off against each other just two weeks ago. Seattle won the regular season match 4-0.

Seattle U

Seattle is led by Caroline Penner who has amassed seven goals in just 13 contests. She leads the team in total points as well with 14. Kailee Wilson isn't far behind her with 10 total points on the year, coming on three goals and four assists. Kassidy Kirgan allows just over one goal per game and has 59 total saves on the year for the Redhawks.

"Seattle is a great team that has been here many times before. But we also earned our way into the postseason. As of right now everybody's record is 0-0-0." Said SUU Head Coach Kai Edwards.

Southern Utah

SUU is led by Whitney Gardner who has 13 points on the year and has done it in multiple ways. Five assists and four goals on the season, Gardner has largely been unstoppable for the Thunderbirds.

Sammie Sofonia has been battling injuries late in the year but is another player who can burn you in many different ways. She has three goals and three assists in just 14 games.

Mayu Yamamoto is coming off the news of earning second-team All-Conference honors and will look to continue her unbelievable play into the postseason.

Quotes from Kai Edwards
"We are super proud to represent Southern Utah at a conference tournament, we made it to the 'fourth' season of the year. The postseason is everybody's favorite and we are blessed to get the opportunity to continue playing. We have to take what we have learned in the first three season and come out focused and hungry. We are ready for whatever challenges come our way,  when you get to this stage, in order to keep playing games, you have to beat really good teams. We are hungry and motivated."
