SUU Alumnus Cameron Levins to Race in New York City Marathon

NEW YORK - SUU Athletics is proud to announce that former Thunderbird, Cameron Levins, will be competing in the 2023 New York City Marathon this Sunday, Nov. 5, on ESPN2 at 6:00 a.m. MT.

Levins, a former stand-out for both cross country and track and field, is one of the most decorated athletes in Southern Utah history.  In his five year career, Levins was named an All-American in Outdoor T&F in 2011, won the Bowerman award for top collegiate track and field athlete in 2012, and won two Summit League titles for XC and Indoor T&F.

Since his graduation from SUU, Levins has continued to compete internationally in distance running. In 2012, he represented his home country of Canada in the 2012 London Olympics, where he finished 11th in the 10,000 meter race and 14th in the 5,000 meter.  Most recently, Levins ran in the 2023 Tokyo Marathon back in March, where he finished fifth overall with a time of 2:05:36.

The New York City Marathon is considered one of the most prestigious events for distance runners around the world.  This year, over 128,000 runners entered the drawing with only five percent being selected.  The 26.2 mile course will begin on the outskirts of Staten Island, run through Brooklyn and Queens before finishing in Central Park.

Thunderbird Cross Country and Track & Field head coach Eric Houle, who coached Levins for five years here at Southern Utah said: "While at SUU, Cam won two National Championships, the Bowerman Award and competed in the 2012 London Olympics Games. Cam's performances put SUU on a National and World Stage. Good luck to Cam in this year's New York Marathon."
