CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah University women's volleyball team competed against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Saturday, Nov. 4 at the America First Event Center, falling in four hard fought sets. The Thunderbirds moved to 5-18 and 1-12 in Western Athletic Conference play, while the Vaqueros improved to 16-11 on the season and 10-4 in WAC play.

"Proud of our fight tonight after the first set. We played more together as a team and showed grit. We need to find a way to produce more kills and be more effective offensively. Our serving was some of the best of the year. We look forward to our last home match with pride in how we played!"

The Vaqueros claimed the first set 25-13. Hana Makonova and Natasha Obradovic each contributed a pair of kills in the period for the Thunderbirds.
Set two was a tight affair. The Thunderbirds owned a 15-14 lead midway through. After the Vaqueros fought back to take a four point advantage (23-19), Andrea Spasojevic poured in a kill and two blocks to spark a 5-0 SUU run to push the Thunderbirds in front 24-23. The Thunderbirds were able to narrowly clinch the set 28-26.
The Vaqueros took a 15-12 advantage to start the third set. Southern Utah battled back, relying on three kills from Spasojevic to tie the score at 17-17. UTRGV was able to pull away in the end, taking set three 25-21.
The fourth set was another close contest. The Thunderbirds held a 24-21 advantage late in the set. The Vaqueros would fight back to tie the score at 24-24. Despite three kills in the set from both Spasojevic and Obradovic, UTRGV would go on to win the set 28-26 and the match 3-1.
UP NEXT
The Thunderbirds return to the America First Event Center on Monday, Nov. 6 as they host in-state rival Utah Tech. The match is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. MT.
