Southern Utah Shatters Four School Records in Southern California

AZUSA, Calif.—The Southern Utah University Track and Field team had an incredible weekend in California. Several Thunderbirds earned top ten all-time marks, and Astley Davis, Haley Tanne, the men's 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams all set new school records. 


Bryan Clay Invitational 

Haley Tanne kicked off the competition at the Bryan Clay Invitational Thursday by improving her school record in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase, marking her fourth time breaking the record in her Thunderbird career. Tanne breezed to a time of 10:10.69 against some of the nation's best competition, beating her previous record by five seconds. Madisan DeBos also climbed up the all-time school steeplechase rankings, finishing with a time of 10:33.91 to move into third place in the SUU history books. 

 Southern Utah saw three more school records fall on Saturday. The men's 4x100 meter relay team of Cameron Beans, Ricardo White, Nelson Douglas, and Dylan Gibson opened the final day of the competition by bolting to a time of 40.31 to shatter the school record by two seconds and clinch first place in the event.

The men's 4x400 meter relay team, consisting of Dylan Gibson (46.47), Nelson Douglas (47.32), Ashton Miller (48.39), and Jaedyn Carpenter (45.11) followed up that performance by running a dominating race to claim a new SUU school record, the event win, and the Bryan Clay Invitational event record with a blazing time of 3:07.98. 

 Astley Davis continued his historic charge through the Thunderbird record books by destroying his previously held school record in the triple jump (50'10"), by leaping to a mammoth jump of 51'11" to take third place in the event and rank him 15th in the country.

The Thunderbirds also saw several athletes set new top ten program marks throughout the weekend.

After earning a personal best at Long Beach on Thursday, Cedar English recorded a new massive personal record in the men's long jump, leaping to a monstrous mark of 25' 4 ¼" to take fourth place in the event and second place all-time for the Thunderbirds. 

In the women's long jump, Jentry Skidmore jumped to a giant personal best of 19'11 ¾" to earn second place all-time for SUU and sixth place in the event.

 In his second 3000-meter steeplechase ever, Hayden Harward ran a jolting time of 8:51.79 to place 15th, putting him in third place in Southern Utah's history books. In the same race, Lanse Larsen took a spill in the final lap but got up and closed hard to secure a 20-second personal best time of 9:20.84. 

The women's 4x400-meter relay team, consisting of Maya Benjamin, Jentry Skidmore, Savannah Nielson, and Shante Myrie, ran an impressive time of 3:46.79 to rank them fifth all-time for Southern Utah. 

Dylan Gibson set a new personal best in the 200 meters sprinting to a rapid time of 21.25 to secure 10th place, tying for the eighth-best time in the Thunderbird record books. 

Savannah Nielson put up a personal record in the 100-meter hurdles clocking a time of 14.01, which is the fifth-best time in program history. 

Southern Utah earned two stellar personal records in the 400-meter hurdles. Matthew Hayes ran a solid time of 53.74, securing 19th place, while Ashton Miller finished close behind in 22nd place with a 54.03. 

Coleman Cragun ran a composed 10,000-meter race finishing in 13th place with a time of 29:52.64 to earn a personal record.  

Ajia Hughes earned a season-best mark of 5'8 ¾ in the women's high jump to take 11th place. 

Iana-Michovani Graham blistered to a time of 24.68 in the 200 meters to collect a personal record. 

Lanse Larsen and Nathan Carlin each posted a personal best in the men's 1500 meters. Larsen blistered to a 3:52.69, and Carlin finished with a 3:55.70 in their respective heats. 

In the women's 1500 meter, Haley Tanne recorded a time of 4:26.21 to earn seventh all-time at Southern Utah. Madisan DeBos wasn't far behind, improving her hold on tenth all-time for SUU with a time of 4:27.76. Nixie Killpack claimed her third consecutive four-second personal record this season improving to a time of 4:32.22. 

Payton Riggs improved his hold on seventh place all-time in the 800-meter mark for Southern Utah with a burning time of 1:51.06. 

Addison Dalton earned an enormous 30-second personal record in the 5,000 meters with a 16:53.88 to take fourth place in her heat. 

Santiago Gaitan ran a nine-second personal record in the 5,000 meters with a 14:14.72 to secure sixth place. 

Justin Weidauer secured a personal best mark in the men's discus with 148'0", taking 27th place overall. In men's hammer throw, Dillon Petillo hurled a personal best 147'7" to claim 38th place. Victor Pampuch also threw a 49'3 1/2" personal record in the shot put.   


Pacific Coast Invitational

Jaedyn Carpenter ran a commanding 400 meters posting a time of 47.39 to secure first place in the event and set a new Pacific Coast Invitational event record. Dylan Gibson was right on his tail, taking third place with a time of 47.85.  

Seadra Hamilton fought her way into the SUU record books with a personal best time of 14.36 in the 100-meter hurdles, clinching ninth place all-time for SUU. 

SUU's women sprinters recorded a flurry of personal bests in the 100 and 200 meters. Secret Mceuen missed out on the school record in the 200 meters (24.11) by a fraction of a second, running a time of 24.12 to improve her hold on second place all-time for SUU. 

Iana-Michovani Graham ran a wind-aided best in the 100 meters, cruising to a time of 11.74 in the 100 meters.

Shante Myrie followed suit, grabbing her own personal records with an 11.94 in the 100 meters and a 24.83 in the 200 meters. 

Maya Benjamin and Ronnie Walker rounded things with new bests in the 100 meters. Walker ran a time of 12.09, and Benjamin secured a 12.16. 

Joren McKeever clawed his way onto the podium in the high jump, taking third place with a mark of 6'9". 

On the men's side, Cameron Beans had a stellar showing in the 100 and 200 meters. Beans dashed to a fourth-place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 21.28 and 13th place in the 100 meters with a time of 10.59. 


Mount Sac Relays 

Earlier in the week, the 4x400 meter relay team, consisting of Jaedyn Carpenter, Dylan Gibson, Jace Rodgers, and Matthew Hayes ran a blistering time of 3:12.40 to take 10th place and clinch fourth all-time for SUU. 

Joren McKeever clinched 14th place in the men's high jump elite division, leaping to 6'8 ¾". 

The men's 4x100 meter relay team, consisting of Cameron Beans, Richardo White, Nelson Douglas, and Noah Bringhurst, took 10th place with a time of 40.73. 

On the women's side, Ronnie Walker, Iana-Michovani Graham, Maya Benjamin, and Secret Mceuen earned 15th place in the 4x100 meter relay team with a time of 46.09. 


Cal State LA Twilight Meet 

The Thunderbirds added the Cal State Los Angeles Twilight throwing meet on Thursday, Apr. 13 and logged multiple personal records and top ten marks in SUU's history books. 

Rebecca Hazelet placed fourth place in the hammer throw with a toss of 172'1 ½", putting her in seventh place all-time at SUU. 

Dominick Vasquez and Justin Weidauer claimed personal records in the men's discus. Vasquez launched a 150-0, and Weidauer claimed his second personal record of the weekend, throwing a 146'10".
