Box Score CEDAR CITY, Utah -- After exchanging goals in the final 10 minutes, the Thunderbirds tied for the second time this season with a 3-3 final score against the University of Nevada.
Ashley Rivera started the scoring in the 17th minute off a set-piece breakdown for the Thunderbirds. SUU would go up 2-0 on a finish from Skylar Cano off the beautiful assist from Sammie Sofonia.
Just a minute later though the Wolfpack would respond with their first goal of the game, a header by Gabby Brown, assisted by Penny Murphy.
Wouldn't take long for Nevada to tie things up, just five minutes into the second half a goal from Luz Arreaga on an assist from Lauren Muff would make it 2-2.
The next 40 minutes were competitive from both sides, each taking turns with powerful shots on net and grade-A scoring opportunities. SUU took the lead once more after a unbelievable free kick from Chiaki Tikase from just outside the 18 curved in past the goalkeepers outstretched hands and it appeared with just eight minutes left to play the Thunderbirds had put things away.
Aggressive play from the Wolfpack down the stretch led to a penalty being called in the box and a penalty kick being awarded to Brown who knocked in her second goal of the night.
Quotes from Kai
"We competed against a good team, created a lot of great chances. Good comeback after Tuesday's game. Cal State Fullerton is a great team and we need to be ready for that."
The Thunderbirds had a really solid performance in their home opener, tallying 12 total shots and seven shots on goal. Thunderbirds found the back of the net five times but had two of them called back due to offsides. Sofonia led the way with three shots on goal and an assist on the night.
