CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah University women's volleyball team played Grand Canyon on Thursday, Sept. 21 at the America First Event Center, falling in three sets. The Thunderbirds move to 4-7 on the year and 0-1 in Western Athletic Conference play, while the Antelopes improve to 8-4 and 1-0 in WAC play.

"Thank you to everyone who supported our match tonight. GCU is a refined team that did a lot well and we didn't perform well on any of our skills. The promising outcome of tonight is we saw more ownership. Immediately after the game, the team spoke about what we needed to do differently and how we can attack practice tomorrow. That's what our next focus is."

MATCH RECAP
Grand Canyon took a 6-2 lead to start the match. Southern Utah battled back, with Andrea Spasojevic adding two kills to jumpstart a 10-5 run to push the Thunderbirds in front (12-11). The Antelopes responded with a 9-2 burst to go up 20-14. Spasojevic and Hana Makonova combined for three kills to attempt a late comeback, but GCU would go on to take the set 25-18.
Natasha Obradovic powered the offense with three kills to help SUU earn a 7-6 advantage early in the second set. Grand Canyon used a 5-1 run to take a three point lead (11-8). The 'Birds fought back to get within one, 12-11. That was the closest the 'Birds would get, as GCU would use a 13-7 stretch to claim set two 25-18.
Spasojevic and Makonova each added two kills to lead the Thunderbirds in set three, but it wasn't enough as the Antelopes would win the set 25-13 and the match 3-0.
UP NEXT
The Thunderbirds will hit the court on Saturday, Sept. 23 as they host California Baptist. The match is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. MT.
