PROVO, Utah - The Southern Utah University men's and women's track & field teams competed in the BYU Cougar Invitational in their first meet of the 2024 season at the Smith Fieldhouse.

Women's Recap
The Thunderbirds were led by freshman Makenna Skoczylas and junior Ariana Baker in the pole vault, who both cleared 12' 4.5", breaking the former school record of 12'4". Ariana followed up her performance with a 12'8.25", giving her sole possession of the school record.
Southern Utah also had several stellar performances from their running athletes, including a 1-mile time of 5:05.88 from Madison DeBos, putting her in fifth overall in the event. In the 60m hurdles, Savannah Nielson secured first place with a time of 8.62 seconds. Shante Myrie impressed in the 60m dash, placing second with a time of 7.65 seconds.
Myrie, Jayden Lightford, Seadra Hamilton, and Kimberly Winward powered their way to a fifth-place finish in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:57.53.
Men's Recap
On the men's side, the T-Birds were led in the 400m dash by sophomore Nick Pembroke, who finished in third with a time of 49.64 seconds. Kadan Allen and Nathan Carlin also finished in the top 10, securing sixth and seventh place with times of 50.85 and 50.93 seconds respectively. Santiago Gaitan finished in fourth place in the 3000m with a time of 8:07.75.
Cedar English and Easton Smith fueled the way for the 'Birds in the long jump, finishing first and second with distances of 23'10.25" and 22'10.5" respectively.
Noah Bringhurst, Dylan Gibson, Pembroke, and Jace Rodgers soared to a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay with a 3:17.75 time.
Up Next
Both teams will have a short turnaround as the Thunderbirds will travel down to Flagstaff, Arizona next Friday, Jan. 19 to participate in the NAU Lumberjack Team Challenge.
