Thunderbirds Shutout Lopes In Second Half; But Fall 3-1

CEDAR CITY, UTAH -- The Thunderbirds gave up three goals in the first half but pitched a shutout in the second against top-ranked Grand Canyon University on Friday. Ultimately, coming up short, 3-1.

Head Coach Kai Edwards said

"Credit to GCU on some good finishing. Playing the top team in the league and beating them in corners, tying in shots and having more possession is something I like. They scored more goals than we did and that's what it came down to. We have everything to play for next week."

Game Recap

The Lopes opened the scoring very early, just 40 seconds into the game, by earning a freekick just outside the box. A shot ricocheted off the SUU wall, and AJ Loera for GCU was able to finish off the rebound.

Things sustained for a while, with SUU creating some quality chances. But then again, in the 28th minute, Bella Piete, on a give-and-go from Brenna Alderson, slid a shot under a sliding Darya Mosallaei. And just two minutes later Payton Fisher somehow finished a shot from almost the end line to make it 3-0 for the Lopes.

The second half was all SUU, with five corner kicks and again creating a ton of opportunities. Finally, Hailey Hamataka's beautiful service on a set-piece corner kick found the head of Aubrey Murray, and DeAira Jackson never had a chance at it.

Statistical Recap

The teams were tied in total shots at 11 apiece, but SUU had seven on target compared to just four for GCU. SUU took 10 corners, five in the first and five in the second, compared to just two all game for the Lopes.

Aubrey Murray scored her first career goal on a beautiful header and is incredibly deserving. She is second on the team in total minutes played this year and has been instrumental in the Thunderbirds' success so far. Hailey Hamataka recorded another assist for the Thunderbirds, the sixth of her career and her 14th point.

Steph Roper led the team in shots (3) and shots on goal (2).

Darya Mosallaei played the first half for SUU and recorded one save on four shots faced, and Stacy Barresi played the second half and didn't see any shots.
