CEDAR CITY, UTAH -- The Southern Utah Women's Soccer team played their way to a 0-0 tie against top-ranked WAC opponent Seattle University.
Head Coach Kai Edwards said
"They created a lot of problems and we solved a lot of problems. A shutout versus a top team is great. The leadership from everyone after a tough loss last week was great to see. The squad controlled their response and it was awesome to see."
Game Recap
The Thunderbirds did a phenomenal job throughout the game, not allowing Seattle U's playmakers any space to work. Caroline Penner, who is second in the league in goals scored, could only find two shots on goal.
The game was filled with impressive defensive plays from both sides, and neither team could find any offensive rhythm. Jenna Grider had the play of the first half. As SUU's goalkeeper Darya Mosallaei was out of the play, Grider lunged toward the near post and just barely got her foot on a shot from Seattle U before it crossed the goal line, and Mosallaei was able to jump on it.
The second half was a lot more of the same, as the Thunderbrids knew a 0-0 result would be in their favor, they put 10 players in the defensive half and played some a quality 45 minutes of soccer. And once again, Darya Mosallaei was exceptional, particularly in the match's final five minutes, with Seattle U earning back-to-back corner kicks. Mosallaei stayed composed under duress and could keep out multiple dangerous balls from the Redhawks. Ultimately a Seattle U player sent a shot wide of the net, and Mosallaei sent a goal kick out of bounds and the final few seconds ticked off the clock.
Statistical Recap
The 0-0 result is the first time the T-Birds have earned a point against Seattle U, and it is just the third time this season that the Redhawks have been shutout.
Sarah Assumma and Liz Orubor were the only players for SUU to record a shot on goal with one each.
Seattle U had 14 shots, eight of which were on target. Caroline Penner and Kailee Wilson led the team with two shots on goal each.
The entire defensive unit was instrumental in the Thunderbirds' fourth shutout of the year. Jenna Grider, Adaleyo Oguntade, Aubrey Murray, and Rylan Tebbs all played 90 minutes for SUU.
Darya Mosallaei adds another shutout to her SUU resume, this time recording seven saves in the win.
