Thunderbirds Set to Wrap Indoor Regular Season with Another Two-Meet Weekend

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah University track & field teams are back in action for their final regular season indoor meets at the Husky Classic and Don Kirby Invitational on Friday, Feb 9, and Saturday, Feb 10.

Last Time Out

Last weekend, the T-Birds traveled to NAU for the second time this season to participate in the Ron Mann Classic.

In the mile run, the men's team finished with four runners in the top 10, including a 4:21.02 and second-place finish from Jacob Peterson and a third-place finish from Hayden Harward with a time of 4:23.55. Nethaneel (Ban) Taylor and Camden Cox rounded out competition in sixth and seventh place and times of 4:28.27 and 4:29.02 respectively.

The T-Birds also posted strong performances in the 800m, with Brady Bettridge and Bailey Oswald securing fifth and seventh with times of 1:58.50 and 2:01.95.

Freshman Trent Summers finished strong in the pole vault, clearing 14'07.25", securing a new personal record and tying him for eighth all-time in school history. In the shot put, Victor Pampuch also secured a PR with a fourth-place finish and a distance of 49'06.50".

For the women's team, Gentry Perkins led the 'Birds to a third-place finish and a time of 2:18.40 in the 800m, setting a new season-best in the process. In the 200m, Secret Mceuen secured fourth with a time of 24.66 seconds. Makalya Pitcher set a new PR in the mile run with a 10th-place finish and a time of 5:21.84.

A season-best from Emelia Thurston in the long jump helped her to secure a sixth-place finish at the event with a distance of 18'03.75".  Melissa Crane was close behind with a seventh-place finish, setting a new PR with a distance of 17'09.75"


Meet Info

The Husky Classic will be hosted at the Dempsey Indoor Center, just west of the University of Washington main campus.

The field will feature a number of familiar opponents for Southern Utah, including in-state opponents Utah and BYU, host school Washington, and several other Pac-12 opponents such as Arizona, California, and Colorado.

Competition will kick off on Friday, Feb. 9 at 2:30 p.m. MT with the mixed gender mile run and wrap up at 1:50 p.m. MT on Saturday, Feb. 10 with the men's 4x400 relay.

The Don Kirby Invitational will occur at the Albuquerque Convention Center, located in the heart of downtown Albuquerque.

Among those participating in the event include host school New Mexico, Northern Arizona, BYU, and Nevada.

The meet will start with the men's pole vault at 10:00 a.m. MT on Friday, Feb 9 and conclude with the women's 4x400 relay at 3:00 p.m. MT on Saturday, Feb 10.
