Thunderbirds to Take on Lancers in Three-Game Set

Southern Utah Softball is Presented by Jennifer Davis ERA Realty

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Thunderbirds will travel to Riverside, California, this weekend to compete against California Baptist in a three-game set. The teams will square off in a doubleheader on Friday, March 22, beginning at 5:00 p.m. MT, and continue the series the next day with a single game at 5:00 p.m. MT. The games will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Southern Utah

Junior Karmyna Becerra has spearheaded the Thunderbirds' offense, boasting a team-leading .385 batting average and an impressive OPS of 1.030. She has driven in ten runs, showcasing her speed with nine doubles and displaying power with three homers this season. Additionally, junior Ariyana Miranda has been a formidable presence, maintaining a .297 batting average with a team-high 18 RBIs and eight home runs. Adding depth to the lineup, junior infielder Laurie Cooke has contributed with a .321 batting average. 

On the pitching front, Southern Utah has relied on freshman Emily Delgado, who has logged 69.2 innings, including four complete games and two shutouts. Despite a 4.52 ERA, Delgado leads the team with 45 strikeouts. Sophomore Delaney Baker has also provided crucial support, pitching 41.1 innings and tallying 11 strikeouts with a 5.25 ERA.

California Baptist Lancers 

The offensive leaders for the California Baptist Softball team have showcased an impressive performance throughout the season. Matti Severns stands out with a batting average of .370, displaying consistency and reliability in her 54 at-bats. Following closely is Kayla Lyon, who has shown power and speed with 28 hits, including 12 doubles and a home run, totaling a batting average of .359. Kalena Burns has also been instrumental, contributing significantly with 29 hits, including four doubles and a team-leading four home runs, showcasing both power and consistency at the plate. These players have propelled the team's offensive attack, setting a high standard for success on the field.

The Lancers' pitching squad has been the backbone of their season, spearheaded by the dynamic duo of Presley Hosick and Jazmine Castaneda. Hosick, with a stellar 2.21 ERA, has been a force to be reckoned with, notching four wins and four losses across 17 appearances, including eight starts. Castaneda adds to the firepower with her own impressive 2.77 ERA, securing four wins against just one loss in 14 appearances and five starts. Carly Limosnero and Morgan McConnell round out the rotation with ERAs of 2.86 and 3.13, each showcasing their grit and determination in the circle. With a combined ERA of 2.78, these pitchers have been the linchpin of the Lancers' defense this season.
