Thunderbirds to Take on Lopes in Phoenix

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Thunderbirds are preparing to make a final push to qualify for the Western Athletic Conference tournament. Southern Utah will try to gain some ground playing on the road this weekend at Grand Canyon. 

The T-Birds are currently in eighth place in the WAC with a conference record of 6-11 and an overall mark of 17-21. The Lopes are the top-ranked team in the WAC, with an overall record of 36-9 and a 15-2 record in WAC play.

Southern Utah

Southern Utah's Softball team boasts a potent offensive lineup spearheaded by standout performances from multiple players. Leading the charge is Karmyna Becerra, who boasts a robust .339 batting average fueled by 43 hits, including nine doubles and nine home runs. Emily Gonzalez closely follows with a .304 average, tallying 31 hits and five homers. Ariyana Miranda contributes significantly with a .327 average and an impressive 1.051 OPS, leading the team with ten home runs and 27 RBIs.

On the pitching front, Junior Keimon Winston's return to the circle has been instrumental for the Thunderbirds, boasting a respectable 4.54 ERA and a solid 1.72 WHIP while securing 32 strikeouts across 49.1 innings pitched. Freshman Emily Delgado has also made a significant impact despite a 4.83 ERA, showcasing an impressive 77 strikeouts over 107.1 innings. Meanwhile, Sophomore Delaney Baker has been a formidable presence, leading the team with a 4.31 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 65 innings.

Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon University's softball team is currently on an impressive winning streak, having swept Tarleton State and clinched 11 consecutive victories in the WAC. Leading the charge is graduate first baseman Ashley Trierweiler, who not only leads the nation in hits with an impressive tally of 66 but also ranks in the top 20 nationally for batting average at .449. Trierweiler's stellar performance sets the tone for GCU's offensive prowess, which is further underscored by their top-10 rankings in batting average, scoring, and doubles.

The team's lineup boasts many standout performers, including Kayla Rodgers, Savannah Groshong-Kirk, and Kristin Fifield, who consistently contribute impressive batting averages and on-base plus slugging percentages (OPS). On the pitching front, Meghan Golden leads with an impressive ERA of 2.33, closely followed by Ariel Thompson and Hailey Hudson. Golden's prowess on the mound is matched by her teammates, who collectively maintain a formidable ERA below 3.00.
