Thunderbirds to Take on Texans with Tournament Implications

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah will hit the road for the final regular season series at Tarleton State this weekend. The Thunderbirds will take on the Texans in a doubleheader on Friday, May 3, beginning at 3:00 p.m. MT, and wrap up the season with a single game on Saturday, May 5 at 10:00 a.m. MT. 

The T-Birds are currently in a three-way tie for seventh place in the standings with Stephen F. Austin and Abilene Christian each team has an identical 8-15 record in conference play. The Thunderbirds hold the tiebreaker against both schools heading into the final weekend. SUU is currently sitting at 19-25 overall. The Texans are 7-15 against WAC opponents and have an overall record of 21-30.

Southern Utah

The Thunderbirds have been led at the plate by several standout players this season. Karmyna Becerra's batting average of .350 stands out in the stat sheet. The junior third baseman has an impressive nine doubles and ten home runs on the season, tallying the second-most RBIs on the team with 25. Sophomore Emily Gonzalez is coming off a huge weekend where she collected eight hits, driving her season average up to .350. Gonzalez has 24 RBIs and three home runs during the 2024 campaign. Junior Ariyana Miranda has led the squad in home runs all season with ten and has the most RBIs with 28, all while batting a crisp .310 for the year. 


In the circle, the Thunderbirds have been able to rely on three key starters to keep them in the game. Sophomore Delaney Baker leads the team in ERA with 4.49, but freshman Emily Delgado is right behind her with an ERA of 4.61. Delgado leads the team in strikeouts with 87 in 123 innings of work. Junior Keimon Winston has been solid for the T-Birds with 38 strikeouts over 59.1 innings pitched, posting an ERA of 4.96. 

Tarleton State

The Texans have been led by Kelci Hill, who has a .434 batting average and leads the team in doubles with 17. Hill also leads the team with five triples this season. Katy Schaefer leads Tarleton in home runs with ten and RBIs with 50. Schaefer has hit an impressive .321 on the year with 12 doubles.  An often overlooked aspect is the running game, where Kayla Wallace has racked up an extraordinary ten stolen bases on eleven attempts. 

On the defensive end, the Texans have relied on Kendall Daniel and Alexa Rehmeier to hold down the circle. Daniel leads the team in ERA at 4.62 with 25 strikeouts on the season. Opponents are batting .320 against Daniel in 63.2 innings pitched. Rehmeier's ERA sits a little higher at 5.73, but she has also struck out a team-leading 55 batters in 95.1 innings pitched. Hannah Blincoe has started 13 games for Tarleton this season on her way to a 5.25 ERA and 36 strikeouts. Blincoe leads the team in opponents batting average against at .288.
