OREM, Utah - The Southern Utah University track & field teams completed the first day of competition at the 2024 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships on Thursday, May 9. Both teams finished in third place with the women's team taking home 19.50 points and the men securing 15 points.

"I'm excited about how the first day went with our throwing, distance, and spring events. Several of our athletes made it to the finals on Saturday, and we hope to continue these outstanding performances tomorrow."
Women's Recap
With 19.50 points, the women's team finished the day behind only Grand Canyon and Utah Valley.
In the pole vault, Ariana Baker impressed with a third-place finish and a height of 12'1", good enough for six points. Makenna Skoczylas was close behind with an 11'7 and a tie for seventh to give her a point and a half.
Rebecca Hazelet and Jessica Jericoff had strong performances in the hammer throw, taking fourth and sixth place with results of 187'4" and 174'3.75" respectively. Both athletes also gave their team eight combined points in the standings.
With a throw of 137'10.75", Samantha Nelson took sixth in the hammer throw, also securing three points. Jackalyn Hatch finished in eighth with a 136'9.75", taking home a point of her own.
Men's Recap
In third place, the men's team scored a combined 15 points, also behind Grand Canyon and Utah Valley.
With a time of 30:46.91, Travis Feeny secured the top spot in the 10k and gave the 'Birds ten points in the standings. Coleman Cragun followed up in fourth with a 31:02.18 time, giving him five points of his own.
In the 200m prelims, Nelson Douglas took a second-place finish with a time of 20.77 seconds, and Jaedyn Carpenter finished sixth with a 21.04 second time. Both athletes will move on to compete in the 200m finals on Saturday.
Hayden Harward and Feeny took second and third in the 1500m prelims with times of 3:51.29 and 3:51.31 respectively. Clayton Adams and Isaiah Labra also qualified for the event finals in seventh and eighth place with times of 3:52.11 and 3:52.20.
