Women's Soccer Battles But Comes Up Just Short At Nevada

Box Score

RENO, NEVADA -- Southern Utah Women's Soccer team falls to 0-2 on the year, coming up just short at the University of Nevada.

The Thunderbirds battled for all 90 minutes but ultimately lost 2-1.

Head Coach Kai Edwards said

"Today was a tough loss because we had some very good moments of toughness and quality soccer. We created many chances, and their goals came from some very good soccer. We played two tough Mountain West teams on the road this weekend in high heat and will leave a better team for it.
UNO (Nebraska Omaha) comes to town on Thursday, and they are very experienced. They start about 8-9 seniors, they are a quality team that went to the NCAA tourney just two years ago. The competitive non-league schedule continues, and we will be ready."

Game Recap
The Wolfpack opened the scoring early on a breakaway goal from Olivia Loomis just 28 seconds into the match.

After a chaotic first few minutes, the Thunderbirds settled in, and freshman Chelsea Loeser found the back of the net on an unbelievable strike from way outside the box. Chiaki Takase with the assist. The score would stay tied until the halftime break.

Once again, Nevada was on the attack early and regained the lead in the 46th minute on a goal from Emily Hulsted, with Emily Rich assisting her.

SUU battled and saw a lot of scoring opportunities but ultimately were unable to even the score.

Statistical Recap
Both teams created many scoring opportunities. The Thunderbirds had 16 total shots, with seven ending up on target.

Darya Mosallaei had a quality game in the net, facing seven shots and saving five, including some point-blank one-on-one situations.

Whitney Gardner and Steph Roper each had two shots on goal, while Loeser had five shots in total and one on target.

Aubrey Murray, Jenna Grider, and Mosallaei played 90 minutes each.

Roper and Angie Knies were given yellow cards.

Up Next
The Thunderbirds' next game is their home opener next Thursday, Aug 22, at 4:00 p.m., against the University of Nebraska Omaha.
