Thunderbirds Battle in Riverside But Fall to CBU

RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA -- The SUU Women's Soccer team was playing its second road match of the week at California Baptist, and despite earning a shutout in the second half, the T-Birds fell to the Lancers 3-0.

Head Coach Kai Edwards said

"First 20 minutes were not good enough. The last 70 was very good with a 2nd half shutout and created some good chances.

If you would have told me this summer going into the last weekend we would be sitting in 4th place and the last playoff spot I would have taken it. Whelp that's just the spot we are in.  All to play for in the last game to earn a spot  in the tourney."

Match Recap

The Lancers have done a good job all season of scoring first, and they came out firing to start the match.

Ava Westlund scored a header in the fourth minute, and then Jessica Ramirez scored a header of her own just four minutes later, and the Lancers jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

Then, in the 18th minute, Ramirez and Westlund teamed up to assist a goal from Kaylee Hauck.

The Lancers took a 3-0 lead into the break.

The second half was a much better half all-around from the Thunderbirds, creating multiple quality scoring chances and forcing a shutout defensively.

All four of the Thunderbirds' on-target shots came in the second half.

Statistical Recap

The Thunderbirds had nine total shots with four landing on target. SUU earned four corner kicks compared to just three for the Lancers. The T-Birds also earned 22 fouls in the match.

Sarah Assumma, Whitney Gardner, and Sicily Clark all had two shot attempts to top the team. Assumma played just 30 minutes but was effective when she was on the field.

Gardner and Clark had one of their two shots saved, and Carly Radke and Nao Yasuda were the other Thunderbirds with shots on target.

Jazmyn Brass had four saves on 18 total shots faced.

Nao Yasuda and Brooklyn Bradley were the only two Thunderbirds to play all 90 minutes.
