The Thunderbirds Last Time Out vs Tarleton State

The Thunderbirds started on the attack early. Whitney Garder rocketed a shot nine minutes into the match from just outside the 18 that the TSU goalie had to dive for to keep out of the back of the net. Gardner made another quality move past a defender and had her shot blocked just a few minutes later.

Tarleton State did not register a shot on goal in the first half. And after 45 minutes, the teams were deadlocked at 0-0.

In the 57th minute, the stars for Southern Utah broke through. Sarah Assumma raced past her defender towards the left side of the box and played an astounding ball back across the field that Whitney Gardner hammered into the back of the net, and the Thunderbirds snatched the 1-0 lead.

Not even 60 seconds later, the T-Birds were again on the attack, this time Assumma played a cross that found freshman Hallee Cowan, who dribbled towards the endline and served a ball back into the box that bounced through a Tarleton State defender, and Sarah Assumma scored her third goal of the season and gave the Thunderbirds a 2-0 lead.

Jazmyn Brass and the Thunderbirds' back line played phenomenally for the remainder of the game, and the T-Birds shut out the high-powered Texans and secured their first conference win of the season.

What to watch for the Wildcats

ACU is on a four-game winless streak and stands with a record of 4-7-1 and 0-2-1 in conference play. The Wildcats earned a 1-1 draw against Utah Tech on Thursday, following their losses to UVU and CBU in their first two conference matches.

The Wildcats have scored just eight goals on the year while allowing 16. Abby Smith leads the team with eight points, coming on four goals. Peyton Hill is perhaps their best player, but she has been unable to find the back of the net this year despite leading the team with 27 shots and 12 shots on goal.

Bella Medrano has the most starts in goal for the Wildcats. She has accumulated 53 saves on the year and has an 82% save percentage.

Abilene Christian was picked just ahead of Southern Utah in the WAC Preseason rankings, receiving eight total points.
