WBB Rolls Past Eastern Washington in 74-68 Win

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah women's basketball team leaps to 3-0 with a dominant 74-68 win over future Big Sky Conference opponent Eastern Washington on Thursday, Nov. 13, in Cheney, Wash. The Eagles' loss drops them to 1-2.

Head Coach Tracy Mason Said:

"Winning on the road is always tough. I was proud of our effort and how we responded when it got close. We're doing such a great job on the boards, and it's allowing us to play faster. I thought Ashley was a huge spark for us tonight off the bench. She made some big plays defensively."

Top T-Birds

  • Shooting 50% from the field, sophomore Sierra Chambers led the team with 18 points and three assists.
  • The Thunderbirds dominated the paint, with junior Brooklyn Fely and sophomore Kortney Doman each logging 14 rebounds and senior Ashley Banks recording three blocks.
  • Despite playing only 23 minutes due to foul trouble, Junior Ava Uhirch nearly reached a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Game Recap

First Half

Southern Utah started the game firing, with Uhrich and Doman draining early triples. Outstanding offense in the paint fueled an 8-0 run for the Thunderbirds, and triples from Chambers and sophomore Denver Anderson boosted SUU to a 24-18 lead.

Banks scored four straight points at the start of a quiet second quarter. The Thunderbirds continued to pour on from the perimeters, with Chambers and Fely adding threes to jump to 40-27 before the half.

Second Half

Uhrich flashed her impressive paint presence to open the second half, scoring eight points in a three-minute span. As the Eagles fought to remain within range, junior Morgan Trigueiro buried a triple, allowing Southern Utah to close the quarter up 59-46.

Eastern Washington took advantage of SUU foul trouble, cutting back to a two-point game with eight-straight free throws. However, six late points from Chambers fended off the comeback, and the Thunderbirds emerged victorious in a 74-68 battle.
