SUU Rains Down Program Record 16 Threes in 70-Point Win

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah women's basketball team poured in a program-high 16 three-pointers during their 111-41 win over the Nelson Warriors. The Thunderbirds' powerhouse performance pushes them to an outstanding 6-1 record, while the Warriors fall to 1-9.


Top T-Birds

  • Scoring a team-high 20 points for Southern Utah off the bench, junior Morgan Trigueiro shot 63.6% from the field and 57.1% from three.
  • Junior Charli Kay added to the historical scoring spree with a career-high 15 points, notching five of her seven shots from the perimeter.
  • Continuing a strong start to her season, junior Ava Uhrich racked up 16 points and nine rebounds.
  • All 13 active Thunderbirds recorded more than 10 minutes and three or more points in the contest this afternoon. Overall, SUU recorded an impressive 65 bench points.

Game Recap

First Half

Uhrich started the first half on a roll, scoring eight points in the first four minutes. Her impressive start, along with junior Charli Kay's accurate shooting from three, contributed to a 31-7 cushion through quarter one.

The Thunderbirds continued rolling through the second period, buoyed by a strong seven-point quarter from freshman Devyn Kiernan. With the clock at eight seconds left to halftime, junior Morgan Trigueiro buried a deep triple, earning her team a 54-20 lead.

Second Half

Southern Utah caught fire from the perimeter in the third, with five different Thunderbirds combining for seven triples. Incredible 77.8% accuracy from the three-point line pushed SUU ahead 88-35.

They continued their historical performance into the final quarter, with Trigueiro sinking a record-tying 15th Thunderbirds three before Kay snapped the all-time record, adding the team's 16th. By the end of the game, Southern Utah had tallied a season high 111 points while holding Nelson to only 41.
