Matchup History

  • The Thunderbirds hold a 3-6 all-time record against the Broncos. In their most recent matchup in 2018, Boise State defeated Southern Utah 88-53.

The Thunderbirds

After being picked last in the Western Athletic Conference preseason poll, SUU is 7-2 and currently ranked No. 1 in the WAC standings. In large part due to fresh faces and young talent, Southern Utah has far surpassed expectations.

The Thunderbirds have poured it in offensively this season, averaging an impressive 81 points per game. Accuracy plays a significant factor in their success, with SUU sinking 43.2% of their shots from the field.

However, it's not just while the clock's running that they're shooting at a fantastic rate. Southern Utah averages 18.4 made free throws per game, placing them eighth in the NCAA. Leading this effort at the charity stripe, sophomore Sierra Chambers has scorched her way to the longest streak in the country, having drained her last 35 free throw attempts.

In addition to their success in shooting the ball, the Thunderbirds have earned a spot as one of the top rebounding teams in the nation. They rank 11th in rebounds per game with 45.7 and outrebound their opponents by an overwhelming margin of 11.7.

Junior Brooklyn Fely captains the clean-up efforts under the glass, bringing down 8.8 boards per game. The transfer from Umpqua Community College has solidified her immediate impact with four double-doubles on the young season.

Scouting Report

Boise State Broncos

The 8-2 Broncos lost their last game at the University of Utah in a 91-58 rout, so they will look to bounce back against the more evenly-matched Thunderbirds. Tied with Colorado State, who defeated Southern Utah last Sunday, Boise State tops the Mountain West standings.

The Broncos average 72.5 points per game while holding opponents to an average of 69.2 points, setting up the potential for a shootout on Saturday. They've also been outstanding from the perimeter, sinking 40.4% of their threes.

Boise State attacks with a well-spread offense led by three Broncos tallying more than 14 points per game. Senior Mya Hansen distributes the ball between these efficient playmakers, racking up five assists per game.
