Southern Utah Earns Series Win With Saturday Split

CEDAR CITY, Utah — The Thunderbirds continued to play well against the Texans, splitting the Saturday doubleheader. Southern Utah won game one 8-5 but fell in the final game of the series 6-5. However, the T-Birds earned the series victory to bring their record to 7-15 on the year. 

Ariyana Miranda led the Thunderbirds at the plate this weekend with an incredible .545 average. She picked up six total hits and four RBIs in the three-game series. Miranda blasted a double and a home run to help the cause. Freshman Tawnie Mozeris also posted an impressive weekend with a .429 average with three singles. Arianna Ramirez had a solid series at the plate, picking up four hits, including a double and a home run. The Thunderbirds as a team batted .330 for the series, racking up 15 total runs. 

Sophomore Emily Delgado had an outstanding series in the circle for Southern Utah. Delgado earned two wins on the rubber without allowing an earned run in 8.2 innings pitched. She allowed three walks but struck out five in the effort. Senior Keimon Winston also posted impressive numbers for the T-Birds, pitching eight innings while allowing two earned runs and striking out eight batters.

Game One Summary

Tarleton State started the scoring early, capitalizing on a pair of walks, when Duke crushed a home run to right field to make the score 3-0. The Thunderbirds were able to stop the rally. 

The Thunderbirds loaded the bases in the bottom of the second but the Texans got out of the jam with a pair of outs on the infield. 

The Thunderbirds broke through in the bottom of the third inning, scoring two runs on a double to the left center gap by Arinna Ramirez. Southern Utah tied it when Amyah Boostedt delivered a single to score Ramirez. The T-Birds took the 4-3 lead on a sacrifice fly by Michelle De La Cruz.

The Texans answered in the top of the fourth inning on a solo shot to left field by Germain. Sophomore Emily Delgado shut down the threat and sent the game to the bottom of the fifth tied at four.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the T-Birds recorded two quick outs before loading the bases up for Ariyanna Miranda who delivered a base hit to score two runs. Two more runs came across the plate on an error to make the score 8-4. 

The Texans put a run on the board in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Hill, making the score 8-5. The Thunderbirds held on with solid pitching and defense to win the game. 

Game Two Summary

The Texans once again scored first with a solo home run by Hill in the top of the first inning. The Thunderbirds answered when Kassidy Munoz picked up an RBI to tie the game at 1-1. 

In the top of the second inning, the Texans opened it up, scoring three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Tarleton added a run in the top of the fifth and the top of the sixth to extend the lead to 6-1. 

Southern Utah picked up a run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Ariyana Miranda blasted a solo home run to center field. In the bottom of the seventh, the Thunderbirds added a run when Laurie Cooke poked a base hit through the left side, scoring Mozeris. Miranda then laced a single through the right side to score another, making the score 6-4. Southern Utah Manufactured the next run on a stolen base when the Catcher threw the ball into center field, allowing Cooke to score from third. Shultz held firm for the Texans retiring the next two batters to earn the 6-5 win. 


On Deck

Southern Utah will hit the road again next weekend to take on Abilene Christian University in a three-game set. The two teams will square off in a doubleheader on Friday, March 14, beginning at 1:00 p.m. MT. The Thunderbirds will continue the series with a single game on Saturday, March 15, at 10:00 a.m. MT. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+, and a link to the live stats will be available on the schedule page.
