College Station, Texas - As the NCAA D1 West First Round concluded on Saturday, May 31, the Thunderbirds saw one of their players qualify for Nationals.

"What an excellent week for Southern Utah Track and Field! Getting an athlete through to the national championships is a huge accomplishment. Ajia Hughes is among the best female athletes to compete for Southern Utah athletics. With this past weekend's accomplishments, she has etched her name in the history books here with Southern Utah Track and Field and has the opportunity to join an elite group of previous young women who have been second and first team all-Americans.

Ajia Hughes, who has had a terrific season and has set multiple SUU records, will continue her season as she qualified for Nationals in Eugene, Oregon. On day four of the NCAA D1 West First Round, Ajia finished 11th overall in the high jump with a top leap of 5'11¼". Ajia was the only T-Bird to qualify for Nationals.
On day one of the competition, Jaedyn Carpenter competed in the 400-meter dash. Jaedyn would end up finishing 36th overall with a time of 46.84. Santiago Gaitan also competed on day one in the 1500-meter dash, where he finished 37th overall with a time of 3:55.88.
Jaylee Gandert was the next to compete on day two of the competition, where she would compete in the javelin throw. Jaylee finished in 27th place with a top throw of 46.12 meters.
