T-Birds Earn Quality Result in Home Opener Despite Multiple Lightning Delays

CEDAR CITY, UTAH -- The SUU Women's Soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against tough Mountain West opponent Boise State. The result improves the T-Birds' record to 0-2-1 on the year.

Head Coach Kai Edwards said

"Unbelievably gritty performance versus one of the mountain west and countries best.  Jaz made a great save late and Avery scored a great goal. Awesome performance all-around."

HIGHLIGHTS

GAME RECAP

The Boise State Broncos wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Kenzie MacMillan rifled a perfect cross onto the right foot of Cindy Conner, who fired a shot into the back of the net just four minutes into the match.

The score would remain 1-0 until the first lightning delay at the 20-minute mark.

When the teams returned to action, the Thunderbirds came out strong. SUU earned its first corner of the game, and Nao Yasuda lifted a ball onto the near post, where Tanah Huffines was able to deflect the ball to the top of the box, and senior forward Avery Kyle ripped a shot through traffic and into the back of the net to tie the game at one goal each. The score remained knotted up until the half.

After just three minutes played in the second half, another lightning delay caused a stoppage for around an hour.

The second half was the Jazmyn Brass show. The senior goalkeeper who transferred from Boise State was phenomenal. Totaling five saves in the second half alone, including an unbelievable save off her back foot on a free kick from Boise State late in the half. Brass stayed composed and helped her defense keep the game tied til the final horn sounded.

STATISTICAL RECAP

Avery Kyle was excellent for the Thunderbirds. Scoring a goal and having another his the cross-bar and bounce straight down into the ground. Kyle kept the Boise State defenders guessing the whole time she was on the field.

Nao Yasuda also played a really high-level game, recording a shot and an assist in her 90 minutes of action.

Bridget Guevara, Carly Radke, and Rylan Tebbs also recorded shots on goal.

The Thunderbirds totaled seven shots and five shots on goal.

Jazmyn Brass finished the game with seven saves on 13 total shots faced.

Once again, the Thunderbrids were first to the ball and did a good job defending, earning 14 fouls while only committing seven.
