Thunderbirds Turn Heads at Lumberjack Team Challenge

Flagstaff, Ariz. – Southern Utah track and field turned in a strong performance Friday night, highlighted by NCAA-ranked marks and event victories as the Thunderbirds competed across multiple events.

Men's Recap and Results

Southern Utah's men turned in a strong performance, highlighted by nationally ranked marks and event victories. Ashton Miller won the 400 meters in 47.22 seconds, a personal record that ranks No. 7 in the NCAA and No. 5 in Division 1 this season, while Jaedyn Carpenter followed closely with a runner-up finish in 47.28, earning No. 8 NCAA and No.6 Division 1 recognition. Kadan Allen added another victory for the Thunderbirds, capturing the 800 meters in 1:52.97 to move into the national rankings at No. 64 in the NCAA.

Dylan Cooks claimed the men's triple jump title with a personal-best of 14.92 meters (48-11.50), which ranks No. 54 nationally, while Divin Kalanga placed third in the long jump at 7.02 meters (23-0.50). Southern Utah closed the meet with a second-place finish in the men's 4x400-meter relay, as Carpenter Miller, Ace Brown, and Matthew Hayes combined for a time of 3:20.56, earning a new Division 1 ranking.


Women's Recap and Results 

Southern Utah's women posted multiple top finishes and personal-best performances. Chloe Bingham led the way in the field events, placing second in the high jump after clearing 1.67 meters (5-5.75), while Chayanne Gordon matched that result with a runner-up finish in the shot put at 12.57 meters (41-3.00). 

Sabrina Wright recorded a personal-best time of 57.96 in the 400 meters, contributing to the strong Thunderbirds showing. Southern Utah took second place in the women's 4x400-meter relay, as Sydney Gibson, Addison Wilcox, Mia Kauffman, and Wright posted a time of 4:09.30.

Southern Utah will look to continue its momentum at two events Jan. 30 at the Ron Mann Classic in Flagstaff, Ariz., and Jan. 30–31 at the UW Invite in Seattle.
