Thunderbirds Emerge Triumphant in Defensive 62-49 Win Over Trailblazers

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah women's basketball team jumped to an 8-1 home record with a huge 62-49 win over Utah Tech University on Jan. 24. The victory pushes the Thunderbirds to a 5-3 Western Athletic Conference record and a 13-7 record overall. The Trailblazers drop to 1-7 in the conference and 6-12 overall record.

Top T-Birds

  • A huge factor in the Thunderbirds' success, junior Brooklyn Fely racked up 14 first-half points and never looked back. She ended the game with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and her sixth double-double of the season.
  • Junior Ava Uhrich ruled the boards, bringing down a career-high 18 rebounds to go with eight points in the contest.
  • Thanks to a strong fourth-quarter effort, sophomore Sierra Chambers poured in 15 points in the afternoon.

Head Coach Tracy Mason Said:

Game Recap

First Half

Fely burst to a dominant start, bringing down two rebounds and putting up two baskets to force a Utah Tech timeout barely a minute into the game. Both defenses held strong through most of the quarter, with the Thunderbirds exiting the quarter at a 15-13 advantage thanks to a triple from junior Morgan Trigueiro.

The Trailblazers snatched the lead to start the second quarter, but Southern Utah's defense kept them in range for Fely to tie the game with a layup in the paint. As the first half ticked to a close, Fely notched her seventh basket of the afternoon and boosted SUU to a 25-23 lead.

Second Half

After playing limited minutes in the first half, Uhrich found a groove in the third quarter, scoring two baskets to boost her team ahead by five. The Thunderbirds made ten of their twelve free throws under three minutes, pushing them ahead in the 44-35 game.

Chambers and freshman Devyn Kiernan dropped huge Southern Utah triples to make it an 11-point game, and the Thunderbirds didn't take their foot off the gas from there. They coasted to a 62-49 win by the close of the game.
