STOCKTON, Calif. — Braylon Bingham and Charlie Gillespie each carded a 76 to lead Southern Utah men's golf on Monday, Oct. 12, as the Thunderbirds opened the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational with a team score of 307 (+19). Southern Utah sits 17th in the 18-team field following the first round at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
Bingham Collects Four Birdies
Bingham recorded four birdies on the par-72, 7,189-yard course, finishing the day tied for 63rd alongside Gillespie at +4.
Bingham birdied the first and sixth holes, then added consecutive birdies at Nos. 16 and 17. His four birdies accounted for one-third of Southern Utah's 12 on the day.
Gillespie also birdied the sixth hole and added another at No. 18. Both players posted a 37 on the front nine and a 39 on the back nine.
Sixth Hole Delivers for Southern Utah
All five Thunderbirds birdied the 540-yard, par-5 sixth hole, providing a shared bright spot in the opening round.
David Charles Serdenia added a birdie at the 10th and finished with a 77 (+5), tying for 74th. JingCheng Wang posted a 78 (+6) to tie for 78th, playing the back nine in 37 with a birdie at No. 14.
Michael Stirland also birdied the 14th and finished with a 79 (+7), tying for 87th.
Southern Utah enters the second round four strokes behind Idaho and five behind Sacramento State.
"We need to clean up the big numbers, but there were some good things to build on today. All five guys birdied the sixth, and Braylon gave us four birdies. Tomorrow, the focus is on putting together more consistent rounds and making those good holes count."
Next Up
The Thunderbirds continue the three-day tournament with the second round on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The final round is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 14.
