MADISON, Ill. - Charlie Gillespie fired a three-under 68 in the second round Monday to lead Southern Utah through the opening 36 holes of the SIUE Dolenc Invitational at Gateway National Golf Links.
Gillespie sits tied for 18th at four-under 138 (70-68), leading a Thunderbird lineup that has four golfers under par heading into Tuesday's final round.
Southern Utah posted a four-under 280 in the opening round before improving to a six-under 278 in round two. The Thunderbirds enter the final 18 holes alone in fifth place at 10-under 558 (280-278).
SUU sits three strokes behind host SIU Edwardsville, which holds fourth at 13-under. UT Martin and Idaho share the team lead at 19-under, with Bradley one stroke behind at 18-under.
Head Coach Richard Church said:
"I thought we did a lot of good things today. Charlie was really steady for us in both rounds and put himself in a great position going into tomorrow. Jarell gave us a big lift with that 67 in the second round, and having four guys under par after 36 holes shows the depth we had today. We improved our team score in the second round, which is always something you like to see. There are still shots out there for us, so tomorrow we just need to stay patient, trust what we are doing and give ourselves opportunities."
The Thunderbirds
Charlie Gillespie leads Southern Utah at four-under 138 after recording consecutive under-par rounds of 70 and 68.
Gillespie carded five birdies during his second-round 68, including red numbers on Nos. 2, 3, 10, 16 and 18. He has now played both rounds under par and enters Tuesday's final round tied for 18th.
Jing-Cheng (Jarell) Wang delivered Southern Utah's lowest round of the day with a four-under 67 in round two. Wang improved five strokes from his opening-round 72 to move into a tie for 23rd at three-under 139 (72-67).
Wang's second round included five birdies, taking strokes off the course on Nos. 3, 6, 10, 16 and 18, while surrendering just one stroke with a bogey on the par-four eighth.
Braylon Bingham sits tied for 27th at two-under 140 (68-72). Bingham provided Southern Utah's best opening round with a three-under 68 before adding a one-over 72 in round two.
Michael Stirland gives the Thunderbirds four players below par through 36 holes. Stirland recorded rounds of 70 and 71 to sit tied for 34th at one-under 141. His second round featured birdies on the par-three fourth and 12th holes, the par-four 15th and the par-five 18th.
David (Charles) Serdenia improved by three strokes between rounds, following his opening 75 with a one-over 72. Serdenia sits tied for 65th at five-over 147 (75-72). His second round featured four birdies, including a two on the par-three 17th.
Southern Utah counted six individual under-par rounds Monday, led by Wang's 67 and the pair of 68s from Gillespie and Bingham. Gillespie, Wang, Bingham and Stirland all enter the final round below par.
