Thunderbirds Close Fall at Twin Oaks Intercollegiate

CEDAR CITY, Utah – Southern Utah University men's golf will close the fall portion of its schedule Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 19-20, when the Thunderbirds travel to Springfield, Mo., for the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate at Twin Oaks Country Club.

The Thunderbirds will join a seven-team field for the 54-hole event hosted by Missouri State. Southern Utah will send five golfers into team competition while three additional Thunderbirds will compete as individuals, giving SUU eight players in the field for its final tournament of the fall.

Southern Utah enters the tournament looking to bounce back from the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational while building on several strong individual performances throughout the opening three events of the season.

Head Coach Richard Church said:

"We have one more opportunity this fall, and we want to make the most of it. We've seen some really good golf from different guys throughout the season, and now the challenge is getting those performances together at the same time. Charlie has played well at this course before, Braylon is coming off a great final round in Stockton, and we're excited to get Luke into the lineup. Having Boston, Sky and Charles competing individually also gives us a chance to get more guys tournament experience. We want to finish the fall playing confident golf and give ourselves something positive to carry into the spring."

Gillespie Returns to Familiar Ground

Senior Charlie Gillespie will lead the Thunderbirds lineup at a course where he produced his best finish of the 2024-25 season.

Gillespie tied for 15th at the 2025 Twin Oaks Intercollegiate, highlighted by a four-under 67 in the second round. He finished the 54-hole event at five-over and recorded eight birdies and an eagle during the tournament.

The St. Andrews, Scotland, native returns to Twin Oaks after providing Southern Utah with some of its most consistent golf through the opening two tournaments of this season.

Gillespie began the fall with an even-par 216 at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, finishing tied for 29th after closing with a two-under 70.

He followed with Southern Utah's best individual finish at the SIUE Dolenc Invitational. Gillespie recorded rounds of 70, 68 and 73 to finish tied for 17th at two-under 211, helping SUU finish sixth in the 17-team field.

Gillespie is looking to rebound after finishing 80th at 12-over 228 (76-75-77) at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational.

Stirland Returns to No. 2

Michael Stirland will play from the No. 2 position after finishing second among the Thunderbirds at the Pacific Invitational.

The Hurricane, Utah, native rebounded from an opening 79 in Stockton with matching one-over 73s over the final two rounds, finishing tied for 71st at nine-over 225.

Stirland's fall began with Southern Utah's best individual performance at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational. He finished tied for 21st at one-under 215 with rounds of 72, 69 and 74.

His three-under 69 in the second round of the Gene Miranda included an eagle on the 402-yard first hole and four additional birdies. The round moved Stirland into a tie for 12th through 36 holes before he eventually secured his top-25 finish.

Stirland also played the opening 36 holes of the Dolenc Invitational under par, recording rounds of 70 and 71 before finishing tied for 61st at seven-over 220.

Bingham Brings Momentum From Stockton

Senior Braylon Bingham enters the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate coming off Southern Utah's best performance at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational.

Bingham improved his score in every round in Stockton, recording rounds of 76, 74 and 69 to finish tied for 32nd at three-over 219.

The Cedar City native saved his best for the final round.

Bingham fired a three-under 69 Wednesday, recording four birdies and 13 pars. The 69 was Southern Utah's only under-par round of the tournament and represented a seven-shot improvement from his opening-round score.

It was the latest low round in a fall that has included several strong stretches for Bingham.

He finished tied for 24th at the Dolenc Invitational at even-par 213, opening the tournament with a three-under 68 before adding rounds of 72 and 73.

Bingham has also demonstrated an ability to improve throughout tournaments. He lowered his score in each round at both the season-opening Gene Miranda and the Pacific Invitational.

Wang Looks to Recapture Dolenc Form

Junior Jing-Cheng (Jarell) Wang will occupy the No. 4 position.

Wang has already produced the lowest individual round by a Thunderbird this fall, firing a four-under 67 during the second round of the SIUE Dolenc Invitational.

The Nanjing, China, native recorded five birdies and just one bogey during the round. His 67 helped Southern Utah fire a six-under 278 as a team, its lowest round of the season.

Wang finished the Dolenc tied for 37th at two-over 215 with rounds of 72, 67 and 76.

He will look to regain that form after a difficult week in Stockton, where he finished 96th at 23-over 239 (78-81-80).

Twin Oaks gives Wang another opportunity to close the fall with the type of low round he displayed at Gateway National.

Barnes Moves Into the Scoring Five

Senior Luke Barnes joins the five-player scoring lineup for the final tournament of the fall.

Barnes competed as an individual at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational and put together three consistent rounds, recording scores of 75, 75 and 74 to finish tied for 21st in the individual competition at eight-over 224.

He saved his best score for the final round with a two-over 74, playing his final nine holes at one-under with birdies on Nos. 12 and 16.

Barnes also brings previous experience at Twin Oaks Country Club.

The Cedar City native competed at the 2025 Twin Oaks Intercollegiate, recording rounds of 77, 75 and 75.

Barnes played 18 rounds for Southern Utah during the 2025-26 season and posted a low round of even-par 72 at the Bill Cullum Invitational.

Three Thunderbirds Competing Individually

Southern Utah will also have three golfers competing as individuals, with Boston Dixon, Sky Moon and David (Charles) Serdenia in the field.

The tournament provides Dixon and Moon an opportunity to make their first competitive appearances of the fall.

Dixon is a senior from St. George, Utah, while Moon is a junior from Beaver, Utah.

Serdenia moves into the individual field after competing in Southern Utah's scoring lineup during each of the first three tournaments.

His strongest performance of the fall came at the Dolenc Invitational, where he improved in each round.

Serdenia opened with a 75 before following with a 72 and a one-under 70 to finish tied for 44th at four-over 217. His final round included an eagle on the 455-yard par-four fifth hole along with three birdies.

He has also shown an ability to finish tournaments strongly. Serdenia closed the season-opening Gene Miranda with an even-par 72, an 11-shot improvement from his opening round.

The additional individual entries give Southern Utah eight golfers competing during its final event of the fall.

Back to Twin Oaks

Southern Utah returns to Twin Oaks Country Club after competing in the event during the 2024-25 season.

The par-71 layout played at 6,739 yards for the 2025 tournament.

Gillespie provided SUU's highlight at that event with his four-under 67 in the second round on his way to a tie for 15th. Barnes also competed at Twin Oaks, giving two members of this week's group previous competitive experience on the course.

Southern Utah finished seventh as a team at the 2025 event, with its best performance coming during the second round when the Thunderbirds fired a two-over 286.

This year's tournament moves to the fall portion of Southern Utah's schedule and gives the Thunderbirds a final opportunity to compete before their winter break.

Fall Season at a Glance

Southern Utah's first three tournaments have featured both encouraging performances and areas for improvement.

Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational
15th – 883 (300-294-289), +19

SIUE Dolenc Invitational
6th of 17 – 850 (280-278-292), -2

Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational
18th – 905 (307-299-299), +41

The Dolenc provided the team's strongest complete performance.

Southern Utah opened that tournament with consecutive rounds below par, shooting a four-under 280 and six-under 278 to sit fifth at 10-under through 36 holes. The Thunderbirds eventually finished sixth at two-under.

Individually, Gillespie earned a top-20 finish at the Dolenc, while Bingham finished tied for 24th at even par. Stirland owns SUU's other top-25 finish this fall after tying for 21st at the Gene Miranda.

The Thunderbirds have also shown their ability to go low individually.

Wang owns the team's lowest round of the fall with his four-under 67 at the Dolenc. Gillespie and Bingham have each fired 68s, while Stirland and Bingham have recorded rounds of 69.

Southern Utah now gets one final chance to put those performances together before closing the book on its fall schedule.
