SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Charlie Gillespie fired a bogey-free, 5-under-par 66 and Braylon Bingham added an even-par 71 as Southern Utah men's golf finished sixth among seven teams at the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
The Thunderbirds recorded rounds of 286, 283 and 291 to finish at 8-over-par 860 at Twin Oaks Country Club. Gillespie tied for 10th at 4-under 209, while Bingham tied for 12th at 3-under 210.
"Charlie put together an outstanding round today. To shoot 66 without a bogey takes focus and discipline, and he did a great job of staying committed throughout the round. Braylon also deserves credit for a strong tournament and a steady finish, making par on his final 10 holes. As a team, we need to show more pride and maturity in how we finish golf tournaments, especially when our names aren't on the first page of the leaderboard. We're playing for Southern Utah University and this golf program, not just ourselves as individuals. That responsibility has to matter on every shot, regardless of where we stand."
Gillespie Climbs Into Top 10
Gillespie climbed 15 places on the leaderboard with a final round featuring five birdies and 13 pars.
He birdied the par-5 third, par-3 fourth and par-4 sixth to play holes 1–9 in 3-under 32. He also picked up birdies at the par-5 10th and par-3 15th, recording a 2-under 34 on holes 10–18.
Gillespie found scoring opportunities throughout the course, playing both the par 3s and par 5s in 2 under. His 66 moved him from 1 over through two rounds to 4 under for the tournament, giving Southern Utah its lowest individual round of the event.
Bingham Secures Top-12 Finish
Bingham carded an even-par 71 to tie for 12th at 3-under 210, finishing one stroke behind Gillespie.
His final-round scorecard featured two birdies, 14 pars and two bogeys. Bingham birdied the par-4 first and par-5 eighth, balancing bogeys at Nos. 3 and 5.
He recorded pars on every hole from Nos. 9–18, including all nine back-nine holes. His even-par round preserved his 3-under tournament total and gave the Thunderbirds a second finisher among the top 12.
Wang Records Three Birdies
JingCheng Wang tied for 29th at 4-over 217 following a final-round 78.
Wang recorded birdies at the par-4 first and ninth, helping him play holes 1–9 in 1-over 36. His third birdie came at the par-5 14th.
He played the course's three par 5s at even par Tuesday, recording a birdie at No. 14, a par at No. 10 and a bogey at No. 3.
Stirland Scores on Par 5s
Michael Stirland tied for 44th at 11-over 224 after posting a final-round 76.
Stirland collected three birdies, picking up strokes at the par-4 sixth, par-5 eighth and par-3 11th. He played the three par 5s in 1 under without a bogey, pairing his birdie at No. 8 with pars at Nos. 3 and 10.
His scorecard also included pars at each hole from Nos. 14–17.
Barnes Adds Nine Pars
Luke Barnes finished tied for 50th at 19-over 232 after a closing-round 79.
Barnes birdied the par-4 sixth and recorded nine pars. He played all three par 5s at even par, making pars at Nos. 3, 8 and 10.
He also recorded pars at each hole from Nos. 14–17.
Three Thunderbirds Compete Individually
Sky Moon tied for 44th at 11-over 224 following a final-round 76. Moon played holes 1–9 without a bogey, recording a birdie at the first and pars on the other eight holes for a 1-under 34. His round included 11 pars.
David Charles Serdenia placed 48th at 15-over 228 after shooting 80 Tuesday. Serdenia birdied the par-4 first and recorded eight pars, including pars at each hole from Nos. 4–8. He played holes 1–9 in 2-over 37.
Boston Dixon finished 52nd at 21-over 234 following a final-round 77. Dixon birdied the par-4 12th and par-5 14th and added nine pars. He played holes 1–9 in 2-over 37.
