Southern Utah to Host Redlands in 2026 Tip-Off

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- College hoops are finally here, and Southern Utah women's basketball will host the Redlands Bulldogs on Monday, Nov. 2 at 5:00 pm for its first game of the new season. With sky-high expectations coming into the 2026-27 campaign, the Thunderbirds will look to use this first game to get off to a hot start and build early momentum to carry them through the season.

The Thunderbirds

Southern Utah finished the 2025-26 season with a 19-13 record overall while posting an 11-7 record in conference play in its final season in the Western Athletic Conference. The Thunderbirds made it to the Women's National Invitational Tournament, securing a first-round bye before falling to Pepperdine in the second round by just five points. This year, the goal is to compete for a conference title in the team's first year back in the Big Sky.

The Thunderbirds were one of the best rebounding teams in the country last season, averaging over 41.5 rebounds per game and finishing 21st among Division I squads on the glass. With the top three rebounders from that squad returning this year in Ava Uhrich (9.9 rpg), Brooklyn Fely (8.4 rpg) and Kortney Doman (6.4 rpg), the Thunderbirds have the pieces to repeat their success on the boards in the Big Sky.

Defensively, Southern Utah allowed 68.2 points per game last year, with opponents shooting .400 and .306 from beyond the three-point line. Doman is the team's top defender, leading all Thunderbirds in both steals and blocks last season by averaging more than one per game in each category. Doman is far from the only tough defender returning to Southern Utah this year, as Ava Uhrich, Brooklyn Fely and Devyn Kiernan all finished last season with double-digit blocks and steals.

On offense, the Thunderbirds put up 72.3 points per game while shooting .422 from the field and .330 from three-point range. While Southern Utah lost its top scorer in Sierra Chambers, two double-digit scorers from last year's team are returning: Uhrich and Fely. The Thunderbirds also return five different players that shot better than .300 from three last season, led by Morgan Triguero's blistering .448 mark.

The Bulldogs

The Redlands Bulldogs are a Division III NCAA team from Redlands, Calif. In the 2025-26 season, the Bulldogs finished 19-7 overall and went 11-5 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference before losing in the conference semifinals. On offense, Redlands averaged 73 points per game while shooting .402 from the field and .308 from three. Defensively, the Bulldogs allowed only 58 points per game and held opponents to a .381 shooting percentage with a .244 mark from distance. The Bulldogs were also a very good squad on the boards, averaging 41.8 rebounds per game and outrebounding opponents by a margin of 7.2.
