Scorching SUU Offense Tramples WAC-Topping CBU Team 85-70

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - In one of their most impressive offensive performances of the season, the Southern Utah women's basketball team torched a skilled California Baptist team that sits at the top of the Western Athletic Conference. The 85-70 win on Feb. 12 pushes the Thunderbirds to 16-8 overall and 8-4 in the WAC, while the Lancers fall to 16-9 overall with a 10-2 conference record.

Junior Brooklyn Fely paved the way for her team with a fantastic career-high 31-point night. She also secured 13 rebounds and her eighth double-double of the year (second in the WAC).

Head Coach Tracy Mason Said:

Top T-Birds

  • Fely shot 70.6% from the field and 66.7% from three in her monumental 31-point, 13-rebound night.
  • Tallying 21 points, five rebounds, and four assists, junior Ava Uhrich surpassed 20 points for the fifth time this season. She shot 60% from the field and made three of her six triples.
  • Freshman Devyn Kiernan and junior Morgan Trigueiro rounded out a group of four Thunderbirds who passed 10 points. Kiernan recorded 12 points and cashed in on two of her four three-pointers, while Trigueiro recorded 11 and made three of six from the perimeter.

Game Recap

First Half

Southern Utah barreled onto a game-opening 14-6 run, with juniors Brooklyn Fely and Ava Uhrich each draining a pair of early triples. The Thunderbirds momentum faded towards the end of the quarter, but sophomore Bella Hasan put down a pair of free throws to keep her team ahead 22-17 at the close of one.

Fely and Uhrich continued their scoring spree in the second, combining for 30 first-half points and pushing the Thunderbirds to a comfortable 15-point cushion. Junior Morgan Trigueiro sank her second triple of the game right before halftime to take her team into the locker room up 46-32.

Second Half

SUU erupted after the break on an 11-5 run to put them ahead by 20, buoyed by a pair of threes from freshman Devyn Kiernan. Continued output from Uhrich and Fely fended off an intense Lancers comeback attempt, closing the third quarter with a 65-54 advantage.

The Thunderbirds kept their foot on the gas in the final quarter, with triples from Trigueiro and Uhrich adding to Southern Utah's lead. Fely added icing to the cake by eclipsing the 30-point mark before free throws from Kiernan sealed the deal at 85-70.
