Thunderbirds Finally Face In-State Rival Utah Tech in Cedar City

Presented by: Leavitt Group And Auto-Owners Insurance

2/27/2026 1:04:00 PM

CEDAR CITY, UTAH -- The SUU Men's Basketball team has played rival Utah Tech twice this season, but both contests were in St. George, Utah, at the Burns Arena. On Saturday, the Trailblazers will be in Cedar City at the America First Event Center, an arena in which Utah Tech has never won.

The game will be DARK MODE. Show up, be loud, and wear black!

Head Coach Rob Jeter said

"They are a good team, they play together well and know how to take advantage of mistakes. But both of our games against them this season have been down at their place, and we need the crowd behind us on Saturday. These final three home games will be an important stretch for us."

Previous Matchups

  • SUU is 5-0 all-time against the Trailblazers in Cedar City.
  • The Thunderbirds came up short in both contests earlier this year. In the first matchup, SUU held a double-digit lead in the first half and let it slip away.
  • In the second matchup of the season, Jaiden Feroah dominated with a career-high 35 points on 13-16 from the floor, but SUU struggled slowing down the Trailblazers and ultimately fell 102-91.

The Thunderbirds

SUU has quality statistics throughout all of conference play, despite just five wins to show for it.

The T-Birds are second in the league in scoring at 75 points per game, but are still last in defense, allowing 78 per game to opponents.

Southern Utah is the top of the conference in 3FG%, shooting nearly 40% from deep in conference play, and comes in at third in the league in FG% with a 46% mark. Utah Tech has the league's top 3FG% defense, holding teams to 27% in conference play.

Only Utah Tech has made more three-point field goals in conference play; SUU has 115 makes compared to 130 for the Trailblazers.

Jaiden Feroah and Isaiah Cottrell are No. 1 and 2 in the league in blocked shots on the year. Feroah checks in with 48 and Cottrell with 40.

Elijah Duval and Jaiden Feroah are both in the top-10 in points per game in league play, Duval averaging 15.4 and Feroah 14. Feroah is also second in the league in rebounds with seven per league game.

Dylan Jones and Tanner Hayhurst lead the team in made three's, Jones with 52 on the year and Hayhurst with 48.

The Trailblazers

Utah Tech has played extremely well in conference play. They are currently just a half-game back of Utah Valley for the No. 1 seed in the league, have won eight of their last ten contests, and are currently on a two-game winning streak.

They're led by the stellar play of transfer forward Ethan Potter, who is averaging 16.2 points per game and nearly eight rebounds. He shoots it a league-best 59% from the floor.

Potter is surrounded by shooters as well. Chance Trujillo leads the team with 60 made three-pointers on the year, and Noah Bolanga (56), Jusaun Holt (47), and Berrett Britton (39) are all just behind him.

The Trailblazers have found something with their three-point percentage defense. They lead the league in conference play, holding opponents to just 27% from deep.

UTU moves the ball well and defends as a team. The Thunderbirds will need to stay solid defensively and make some contested shots to be successful.
