CEDAR CITY, UTAH -- Junior shooting guard Tanner Hayhurst earned his first WAC Newcomer of the Week award after leading the Thunderbirds to victory over in-state rival Utah Tech on Saturday.

The T-Birds have won five of the last six Newcomer of the Week awards, and this marks the third straight for Southern Utah.

Head Coach Rob Jeter said

"Tanner is certainly deserving of this award. He obviously shoots the ball really well, but when teams adjust to that, he can also put the ball on the floor and finish at the rim. He works hard defensively and plays a lot of minutes for us."

The Men's Basketball team picked up a huge win against Utah Tech last Saturday, winning 81-67 over the rival Trailblazers.

Tanner Hayhurst paced the Thunderbirds, dropping in a career-high 25 points, including 18 in the first half. He was 8-11 from the field and 5-8 from three-point range. He was also able to tack on four rebounds and snatched three steals.

Tanner now leads the team with 53 made three-pointers on the year, and is doing it at an unbelievable 48% clip. He shoots it 51% from the field and 86% from the charity stripe.

The T-Birds will be back in action next Thursday, March 5, at 6:30 p.m. against another in-state rival, Utah Valley.
