Thunderbirds Fall in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- The SUU T-Birds were in Salt Lake City, taking on the Utes of Utah, and had a lightning delay that lasted more than 2 1/2 hours. Southern Utah ultimately fell 3-0.

Head Coach Steven Lindquist said

"Proud of the way the team battled today through another weather delay. There were some moments where we need to be sharper with our details but I am also happy with some of the things showing themselves from our trainings in these high intensity matches."

Game Recap

The Thunderbirds battled hard through the first 30 minutes, making things difficult for the Big 12 opponent.

In the 30th minute, the weather turned poor, and the wind assisted on the Utes' opening goal. A pass from beyond the half-field line took a massive forward bounce and just cleared the outstretched arms of freshman goalkeeper Tatum Trout and rolled into the back of the net to break the 0-0 tie.

Shortly after the goal, the first lightning strike caused a game delay that lasted more than 150 minutes, but the weather eventually cleared, and the teams returned to the field.

Just minutes after the restart, Katie Callaway put a ball in the back of the net off an excellent header from Maddie Stoddard, and the Utes took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, a wild play inside the Thunderbirds' box saw Julia Oka all alone with Trout, and she put in Utah's third goal of the game.

The Thunderbirds created multiple quality chances, but couldn't get anything past the reigning Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week, Anna Solomon.

Statistical Recap

SUU totaled four shots with two landing on frame. Gracen Blieschke and Kayleigh Acree each had two shots, and each had a shot on goal.

Tatum Trout made five saves on 14 total shots.

Kayleigh Acree, Nao Yasuda, and Rylan Tebbs all played the full match for the Thunderbirds.
