Thunderbirds Earn 2-2 Result On Senior Day

CEDAR CITY, UTAH -- The Thunderbirds held a one-goal lead twice in the match, but the Matadors were able to equalize on both occasions, which ultimately led to a 2-2 draw at Thunderbird Soccer Field.

The Thunderbirds dominated in nearly every aspect of the game, and opened the scoring early. Just five minutes into the match, the T-Birds generated pressure in the final third, and a deflected pass landed at the feet of Sophia Memory, who fired a shot that froze the goalkeeper and ripped into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

SUU created a few more chances over the next few minutes, but ultimately a timely counterattack earned the Matadors a corner kick, and a mess in the box somehow finished at the feet of Theresa Castro, who finished the play to tie the match.

Once again the T-Birds wasted no time scoring to start the second half. This time, just seven minutes after play restarted, an unbelievable ball from Ashlyn Woodbury on the back line sprung Gracen Blieschke, who finished a beauty in the bottom right corner and gave the Thunderbirds another one-goal lead.

Eight minutes later, the Thunderbirds had a good clearance that sailed to half field but was sent right back into the box by Siena Navarra, and Yasmin Azar scored a beauty off the volley to tie things up again.

SUU came so close to finding the game-winning goal. The T-Birds had a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar and another that a defender kicked away on the goal line.

Ultimately, senior day came to a close with a 2-2 draw for the Thunderbirds.

Statistical Recap

The Thunderbirds had 15 shots in the match, with an impressive 11 landing on target. Blieschke once again led the team in both categories, with four total shots and three on target. 

Both of Kayleigh Acree's shot attempts were on target, as were both of Madeline Buczyna's.

SUU earned three corners and drew 11 fouls during the match.

Freshman goalkeeper Tatum Trout made four saves on 11 total shots faced.
