US AIR FORCE, Colo. - Michael Stirland led the way for the Southern Utah men's golf team at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, finishing in a tie for 21st at one-under 215 (72-69-74) as the Thunderbirds wrapped up the three-day tournament with their best team round of the week.

SUU fired a one-over 289 in the final round to climb into 15th place at 19-over 883 (300-294-289). Charlie Gillespie provided the spark on the final day with a two-under 70 as the Thunderbirds improved their team score in each round of the tournament at Eisenhower Golf Club.

Head Coach Richard Church said:

"I was really pleased with the way our guys competed today. We got better each round of the tournament, and shooting 289 today was a good way for us to finish. Charlie put together an outstanding round and really closed strong on the back nine. Michael gave us a great tournament from start to finish, and we had contributions throughout the lineup. There are definitely things we can continue to clean up, but I liked the way we responded and battled all the way through the final round."

The Thunderbirds

Michael Stirland capped an impressive tournament in a tie for 21st at one-under overall following a two-over 74 in the final round. Stirland made three birdies on the day, including back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh holes. He finished the tournament as SUU's top individual on the leaderboard after rounds of 72, 69 and 74.

Charlie Gillespie delivered Southern Utah's' best round of the day, firing a two-under 70 to vault into a tie for 29th overall at even-par for the tournament. Gillespie caught fire down the stretch, playing the back nine at three-under with birdies on holes 10, 12 and 18. His closing 33 helped him shave four shots off his second-round score.

Braylon Bingham continued his steady improvement with a one-over 73 in the final round to finish tied for 73rd at 10-over. Bingham improved in every round of the tournament, going from a 78 on the opening day to a 75 in round two before closing with his tournament-best 73. His final round featured birdies on holes five and 14.

Jing-Cheng (Jarell) Wang provided an electric start to his final round, making three birdies over his first eight holes on the way to a three-over 75. Wang made the turn at one-under 35 before eventually finishing tied for 80th at 13-over for the tournament.

David (Charles) Serdenia made the biggest final-round jump in the Thunderbird lineup, firing an even-par 72 to finish 88th at 19-over. Serdenia's final round was 11 shots better than his opening-round 83 and eight better than his second-round 80. He made four birdies on the day, including two over his final six holes, to close the tournament with his best performance of the week.

Competing in the individual field, Luke Barnes also saved his best for the final round, carding a two-over 74 to finish tied for 21st at eight-over 224 (75-75-74). Barnes made the turn at three-over before settling in on the back nine, where he played his final nine holes at one-under. He highlighted the closing stretch with birdies on holes 12 and 16.
