SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, March 11 ? The University of Utah took advantage of a handful of errors in each game to sweep a softball double-header from Southern Utah Tuesday, taking the first game 8-0 before coming back to win the nightcap, 4-0.
In the first game, Meghan Wilson and Ashley Smuda engaged in pitcher's duel through the first three innings, but the Utes broke loose for seven unearned runs in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead. After Smuda retired the Thunderbirds in order in the top of the fifth Utah took the mercy-rule win.
Smuda threw a five-inning no-hitter to pick up the win, while Wilson gave up four runs (three unearned) on five hits before giving way to Katie Kearns, who gave up four unearned runs on three hits. The Utes were able to take advantage of an error in the second to score their first run, unearned, and another in the fourth to make six of the seven runs scored in that inning unearned.
Smuda improved to 8-5 with the win while Wilson dipped to 0-2.
In game two Kearns got the start and gave up five runs and two hits before giving way to Kristina Brooks in the third inning while Smuday went three innings without giving up a hit before giving way to Brittany Parker, who gave up just one hit in finishing the final four innings.
Utah scored one run in the second inning, then added a pair in the third, taking advantage of an infield error to score the second run. The Utes tacked on one more in the fourth while Smuda and Parker took care of the rest, holding the Thunderbirds without a hit until the seventh inning when Brittany Henderson singled to break up the no-hitter. SUU only got one runner past second base, as Trish Clapham got to third on a wild pitch after walking in the sixth.
Smuda picked up the win while Kearns dropped to 0-3 in the loss.
