FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Oct. 2 - Southern Utah women's soccer was on the board first at IPFW on Friday afternoon, but two unanswered goals by the Mastodons gave the home team a surprising 2-1 victory.  The loss drops the Thunderbirds to 2-7-1 on the season and 0-1-0 in Summit League play, while IPFW moves to 2-5-1 and 1-0-0 in conference.

SUU's Makell Southworth put the first lights on the board as she collected a ball off a Laura Goodrich shot and redirected the ball into the back of the net.  The Thunerbirds had to wait less than five minutes for the lead, as the senior recorded the goal at the 4:38 mark.

However, just over a minute later, IPFW's Lisa Underwood received a pass and drove down the middle of the field to crack a shot from 20 yards, tying the game at 1-1 with just over six minutes elapsed in the first half.  Southern Utah continued to take their shots in the first half, recording ten to the home team's seven and forcing the IPFW keeper to make some tough saves.

The game winner came in the second half off the foot of Underwood as she once again attacked the center of the Thunderbird defense and pushed the ball passed the far post from ten yards to make the game 2-1.  The T-Birds remained the dominant team during the final 45 minutes, but just couldn't get the ball into the net despite recording ten shots to their opponent's eight.

Kristen Fronk and Jessica Yukihiro led the Thunderbirds with four shots each, including two and three on goal, respectively.  SUU keeper Breana Fitzgerald recorded eight saves on 17 IPFW attempts.

The Thunderbirds will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when Southern Utah travels to Rochester, Mich. for a match with the Oakland Golden Grizzlies.
