CEDAR CITY, Utah. - Playing in cold, rainy and windy conditions, the Southern Utah
University women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 defeat to IPFW in the
season-finale at the Thunderbird Soccer Field Saturday afternoon.
The Thunderbirds (5-11-1, 2-7 Summit League)
were on the attack all afternoon, owning advantages in shots (23-7) and in
corner kicks (5-1) but could not overcome a pair of first-half scores by the
Mastodons (7-9-1, 4-4-1 Summit League). Southern Utah saw six of its nine
conference matches decided by one goal.
"We did a great job of creating opportunities
today but just couldn't get a good bounce when we needed to," commented head
coach Brian Stock. "I am very proud with how we competed and again left it all
on the field in another tough, hard fought conference match."
SUU owned the first 20 minutes of play,
firing the match's first seven shots and even had sophomore forward Shelby
Ostler break loose down the left side of the 18-yard box but missed wide right
after finding herself on-on-one with charging IPFW keeper. The Mastodons later
got behind the SUU defense for the first score before a header minutes later
put IPFW up 2-0 at 27:37 mark.
Sophomore forward Missy Lazcano would put the
Thunderbirds on the board less than two minutes after the IPFW goal. Senior
defender Allison Thompson's long pass up the left sideline was received by
Lazcano inside the left 18-yard mark and she dribbled in and fired one past the
IPFW keeper for her second goal in as many matches and fourth goal of the
season.
Southern Utah had a goal waved off with 10
minutes left in the half as Thompson's free kick from 25 yards on the left side
landed in the box and was headed in by Lazcano but SUU was whistled for
offsides to take the goal off the board.
More great chances for the Thunderbirds just
missed in the second half as a long shot by sophomore midfielder Morgan Bridge
hit the cross bar before being cleared off. In the final minutes senior forward
Erin Wright and redshirt-sophomore forward Stacey Brinkman each add had great
looks but could not get one in to even things up.
Redshirt-sophomore keeper Charly Booth made
five saves while Kristen McFadden made 10 saves for IPFW.
The Thunderbirds posted a couple school
single-season records this season, posting program-bests in goals scored (27),
goals-per-game (1.59), corner kicks (86) and allowed the third fewest goals. Junior
Riley Bassett set a school single-season record with 63 shots and finished with
the second-most goals scored in a season with seven. Ostler's five goals are
tied for the fourth-most on the single-season chart while junior Elyse
Alexander's four assists are tied for the second-most in single-season history.
Prior to the match the Thunderbirds
recognized Thompson and Wright who played their final match for SUU.
"I couldn't be prouder of our two seniors,"
stated Stock. "They both brought great energy to every practice and every game
during their four years and are great examples of how to play the game. Allison
should of had two assists today while Erin had a great goal last weekend and
nearly tied today's game in the final minutes but the keeper made a nice save.
They left it all on the field today and we are going to miss them very much."
