Troy Slips Past T-Bird Men

CEDAR CITY, Utah, Nov. 26 - Damon Heuir scored 22 points to lead three Thunderbirds in double-figures but Troy State outscored Southern Utah 11-6 in the final 3:07 to post an 80-76 non-conference win Saturday night.

Will Weathers - who finished with 22 as well - scored the Trojans' final 11 points, hitting a layup and a free throw to give Troy a 72-70 lead with 3:07 to play, then a jumper after an SUU miss to extend the advantage to four.

Tyson Koehler pulled the Thunderbirds within 74-72 with a tip-in of a Jackson Stevenett shot at the 1:47 mark, and the Thunderbirds had a chance to pull even after Jordan Johnson stripped the ball from R.J. Scott, but Stevenett's jumper from the top of the key was off the mark and Daronte Clark grabbed the rebound for Troy.

Another Weathers jumper pushed the Troy lead back to four, then Ray Jones, Jr., turned the ball over on a drive into the lane. He quickly fouled Weathers, who hit two free throws, extending the lead to 78-72, but Heuir hit one of his five 3-pointers to cut the deficit to three.

Jones fouled Weathers on the in-bounds play, and Weathers obliged the Thunderbirds by missing two free throws. Koehler grabbed the rebound, and Stevenett had a good look from the corner to tie but as again off the mark and Tim Owens pulled in the rebound for Troy.

Owens was also fouled, and also missed both free throws. SUU got the ball and Stevenett was fouled but he hit just one of two free throws with 5.7 seconds to play. Once again it was Weathers who was fouled, but this time he hit both free throws to ice the game with three seconds to go.

"We played a good team tonight, a good team with a lot of quickness," SUU Coach Roger Reid said. "And they were able to make baskets when they needed a basket. We needed to hit a shot here or there, and gave up too much dribble penetration, but we gave a good effort."

Ramell Taylor scored 16 points for the Thunderbirds, while Matt Massey added 12. Jones finished with nine assists, one off his career high, to go with five rebounds and five points. Stevenett had six boards to lead SUU, which out-rebounded the Trojans, 40-28.

Scott added 17 for Troy, including 5-of-11 from 3-point range as the Trojans hit 1-of-25 from long range. Emil Jones finished with 13 for Troy.
