Thunderbird XC Adds Battle Born Collegiate Cross Country Challenge In Las Vegas

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The Thunderbird men's and women's cross country teams have added an additional meet, as they will now be competing in the Battle Born Collegiate Cross Country Challenge hosted by USATF-NV in Las Vegas on February 19. The meet will take place at Craig Ranch Regional Park in North Las Vegas.   

Last Time Out 

When the Thunderbirds were last on the course, they competed in the FSU Winter XC Classic at Apalachee Regional Park. 

On the women's side, the charge was led by Alison Pray, who finished in 16th place. She ran the 6K course in 20:40.1 to put herself in content against some of the top individuals in the nation. 

Raquel Chavez finished second for the Thunderbirds in 81st place, running the course in 21:59.3. Haley Tanne was third for SUU in 88th, while Julieta Navarrete-Lamas was fourth for the T-Birds in 90th. 

As a team, the Thunderbirds finished with 360 points to finish in 17th place ahead of Eastern Kentucky. 

On the men's side, the pace was set for Southern Utah by Santiago Gaitan, who finished in 30th place with a time of 24:18.8 on the 8K course. Travis Feeny and Stefen Rasmuson finished neck-and-neck to place 42nd and 43rd respectively. 

Aidan Reed clocked in with a 24:27.4 to finish in 51st, while Nate Osterstock had a 24:30.6 to finish in 55th. 

Southern Utah scored 212 points to finish 9th in the 20-team field.   

Both of Southern Utah's top squads competed in the Garnet Races at the event. 

In the Gold Men's race, Jacob Francis finished in 13th place with a time of 25:24.8.  

In The Rankings

In the most recent rankings from the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association, the Thunderbird men's team dropped three spots in the Mountain Region, moving from No. 5 to No. 8 following the race at Florida State. The men's squad also fell out of the top-30 according to the USTFCCCA, and now are receiving votes in the poll. 

On the women's side, the Thunderbirds remained steady at No. 11 in the Mountain Region rankings. They're ranked directly ahead of Big Sky foes Montana State (No. 12) and Montana (No. 14). 

Meet Info

Races will begin at Craig Ranch Regional Park at 9:30 a.m. MT on Friday morning, and will run until the afternoon. 

Southern Utah's men's team will be competing in the 'Yellow Race' (11 a.m. MT) and the women's team will be competing in the 'Green Race' (1:15 p.m. MT).
