CEDAR CITY, Utah - In the heart of Cedar City, Utah, amidst the majestic red rock landscapes, Southern Utah University's track and field team hosted the 2024 High School Coliseum Championships. An event that returns to Cedar City for the first time in years.
Head Coach Eric Houle Said
"The High School Coliseum Championships Track & Field Meet is managed and run by the SUU Track & Field Program. It's not a money-maker for the program. It is simply a community outreach program that benefits the high schools in Cedar City and the southern part of the state. With 38 teams, men and women combined, and 1000 athletes, it's a great example of our coaches and student-athletes giving back to the communities that support them."Â
Southern Utah Athletes Volunteer
Quinn Hagerman, a dedicated distance athlete from Merced, California, stood amidst the bustling crowd, her eyes sparkling with admiration for the young talents surrounding her. "It's awesome to see so many high school runners involved in the sport and wanting to reach that next level," she remarked, her voice filled with encouragement. "Being a volunteer is a great opportunity to give back and encourage the youth to pursue their dreams!"
Among the volunteers was Secret McEuen, a sprinter for Southern Utah University, her passion for the sport evident in every stride. As she shared her experiences with eager high schoolers, her words resonated with warmth and wisdom. "I loved being a part of such a great stepping stone this meet was for SUU," she expressed, her smile infectious. "I had the chance to talk to a few high schoolers who asked me how to run the 400. I was able to give those girls some tips and tricks on how I run my 400. I would have never gotten this opportunity if we did not have this meet to bring high school track athletes and college track athletes together."
In the midst of the excitement, Jace Rodgers, a hurdler from Middleton, Idaho, reflected on the significance of the event. "Track & Field has taught me so many great life lessons all in itself," he mused, his eyes glinting with nostalgia. "I just wish I would've been able to go to meets like this when I was in high school and have the exposure to actual college athletes as well as the knowledge they have. SUU isn't just hosting a place to improve times, but keeping those big dreams for those high school athletes large."
