CEDAR CITY, Utah – Southern Utah Athletics has announced the hiring of Sammantha Maxwell as the new head coach of the Southern Utah Dance Team. Maxwell officially takes over the program after leading team selections during auditions held on May 23 and will guide the Thunderbirds into the 2026-27 season.

Maxwell brings an extensive background in dance education, choreography, athlete development, and program leadership to Southern Utah. A former six-year member and four-year head captain of the Weber State University Dance Team, Maxwell helped lead the Wildcats to the first NDA National Championship in program history while earning recognition as a five-time USA All-American Dancer and NDA Top Gun Award recipient.
Currently the owner and director of Baxter Dance Training in St. George, Utah, Maxwell has built a reputation for developing high-level dancers and fostering a culture of excellence. Her background also includes professional experience in marketing, brand management, social media strategy, event planning, and athlete wellness through her degrees in Athletic Training and Athletic Therapy from Weber State University.

Collegiate dance has always been a passion of mine, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue building on the strong foundation of this program while helping take it to the next level. The talent, dedication, and work ethic displayed at tryouts were truly impressive. We have assembled an exceptional team for the upcoming season, and I am confident they will represent SUU with pride both on and off the floor. I cannot wait to see what this group accomplishes together. It's going to be an incredible season."
Following auditions on May 23, Maxwell selected a 16-member roster for the upcoming season. Eight members return from last year's squad as well as a member of a previous year's team, providing a strong foundation of experience as the team prepares for a new era under her leadership.

The Southern Utah Dance Team performs throughout the year in support of Thunderbirds Athletics, appearing at football, basketball, and volleyball games, as well as community events, while serving as ambassadors for the university across Southern Utah and beyond. The team also competes at Nationals each year.
