CEDAR CITY, Utah - Freshman Saylar May opened her maiden season at the NCAA level in scintillating fashion as she snared Big Sky Golfer of the Week honors thanks to her amazing outing at the Wolverine Invitational.
"Saylar's performance at the Wolverine Invitational was incredible, and to see her earn Big Sky Golfer of the Week honors in just her first collegiate event is a huge accomplishment," said SUU head coach Caylyn McKinlay. "She showed a tremendous amount of poise and confidence throughout the tournament, and to win by three shots against a strong field says a lot about the kind of player she is. It was also exciting to see her performance help our team finish third, which is a great start to the season for this group. We're really proud of Saylar and excited about what she can continue to accomplish as a Thunderbird."
May, who comes to Cedar City by way of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, Canada, wasted little time planting her flag as a future star on the Thunderbirds roster with a three-shot margin of victory as she captured the individual title thanks to a sparkling eight-under par 208 at Talons Cove. The victory led Southern Utah to third-place honors. Â
That's SUU's best finish as a team since finishing third at both the Kelsey Chugg Invitational and Bobcat Desert Classic during the 2021-22 season. May also became the first Thunderbird victor since Pluem Yongyan captured the Lady Thunderbird Invitational with a one-over also during the 2021-22 season.
Next on the Tee
The Thunderbirds will return to the course Sept. 21-22 at the Yellowstone Intercollegiate, hosted by Montana State at Riverside Country Club in Bozeman, Montana. Southern Utah will compete in the two-day event as it continues its fall schedule.
